7 Bihar Workers Killed After Massive Rock Collapse at Bengaluru Stone Quarry

Seven workers from Bihar were killed after a massive rock collapsed at a stone quarry near Madapattana in Bengaluru on Thursday, police said.

According to police, the tragedy occurred in the early morning at Madapattana in Bengaluru South Taluk.

The victims, all daily-wage labourers employed at a stone crusher site, were trapped beneath the fallen boulder and died on the spot, according to police.

The workers were employed by the Kaveri Company and were at the site when a Hitachi machine operating about 100 feet above accidentally dislodged a rock.

Around 15 to 20 workers were present at the time of the accident. The Tavarekere police reached the spot and initiated an investigation. Preliminary reports suggest the operator failed to notice the workers below.

Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar wrote, "The collapse of a wall in Madapattana of Bengaluru South Taluk has caused the death of 7 workers, bringing immense sorrow. I pray that the departed souls attain eternal peace, that their families are granted the strength to bear this grief, and that the injured recover swiftly. It is the duty of quarry owners to ensure the life safety and security of workers engaged in quarry operations. The government will take appropriate action against quarries that violate regulations.''

Officials had not confirmed whether the quarry had been operating with all required permissions at the time of the incident. Stone quarrying and crushing operations in Karnataka require regulatory clearances, safety compliance and monitoring by multiple departments, including mines, geology, labour and local administration authorities.
