US Charges Iranian Revolutionary Guard Official Ruhollah Bazghandi in Alleged Assassination Plot Against Activist

An official from Iran's Revolutionary Guard has been implicated in a scheme to assassinate an Iranian American writer in the United States, as per a revised indictment submitted on Tuesday. Ruhollah Bazghandi, along with three other individuals, faces charges in this updated indictment related to the attempted murder of Masih Alinejad. Bazghandi remains at large.

Charges Filed Against Iranian Official in NYC Plot

The Iranian opposition figure and journalist, Masih Alinejad, resides in exile in New York City. Although her name is absent from court documents, she confirmed to The Associated Press that she was the intended victim. Alinejad left Iran after the contentious 2009 presidential election.

Revolutionary Guard's Role in International Terrorism

Bazghandi is identified in legal documents as a brigadier general who once led the Revolutionary Guard's counterintelligence division. In October 2017, the US Department of Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control classified the Revolutionary Guard as a global terrorist entity. The designation highlighted its significant role in backing Iran's global terrorism activities.

In April 2023, the office revealed Bazghandi's involvement in assassination schemes targeting journalists, Israeli nationals, and others considered adversaries of Iran. His participation extended to detaining foreign prisoners in Iran and engaging in operations in Syria through the Revolutionary Guard's counterintelligence unit, according to the indictment.

Alinejad's escape from Iran underscores her ongoing struggle against oppressive regimes. Her activism has made her a target for those seeking to silence dissenting voices. The charges against Bazghandi and his associates highlight the lengths to which some will go to suppress opposition.

The case sheds light on the broader issue of international plots orchestrated by state actors against dissidents abroad. It underscores the persistent threats faced by activists who challenge authoritarian regimes from afar.

This development also raises concerns about the safety of exiled dissidents and journalists worldwide. It highlights the need for increased vigilance and protection for those who continue to speak out against oppressive governments.
