US Government Denounces Pro-Iran Hackers' Threats as a Smear Campaign Against Trump Officials
Pro-Iran hackers have threatened to release emails allegedly stolen from individuals linked to President Donald Trump. This move is described by federal authorities as a "calculated smear campaign." The United States has issued warnings about ongoing Iranian cyberattacks, which could threaten services, economic systems, and companies following American strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities.

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) stated that the threat to expose emails concerning Trump is merely "digital propaganda" aimed at harming Trump and other federal officials. CISA spokeswoman Marci McCarthy shared on social media, "A hostile foreign adversary is threatening to illegally exploit purportedly stolen and unverified material in an effort to distract, discredit, and divide." She assured that "These criminals will be found, and they will be brought to justice."
Iranian Cyber Threats Target US Interests
Hackers supporting Tehran have previously targeted US banks, defence contractors, and energy companies after American attacks on Iranian nuclear sites. However, these efforts have not yet led to widespread disruptions. The threat of releasing more hacked emails coincided with a public bulletin from CISA, the FBI, and the National Security Agency. This bulletin warned that hacking groups aligned with Tehran might attack US interests despite a fragile ceasefire between Iran and Israel.
Authorities cautioned that these hackers might attempt to disrupt or disable critical infrastructure systems like utilities, transportation, and economic hubs. They could also target defence contractors or other American firms with connections to Israel. The bulletin recommended measures such as regular software updates and robust password management systems to strengthen digital defences.
Previous Hacking Incidents Involving Trump
Last year, federal prosecutors charged three Iranians with hacking into Trump's presidential campaign. Hackers also targeted the campaigns of Democrats Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. They unsuccessfully tried to leak material supposedly taken from Trump to Democrats and media members.
Reuters reported contacting the alleged hackers online. They claimed possession of a large cache of emails from Trump's chief of staff Susie Wiles, other top advisers, and porn actor Stormy Daniels. A hush money payment to Daniels led to Trump's criminal conviction.
The US continues to face threats from Iranian cyberattacks following American actions against Iran's nuclear facilities. These threats pose risks to services, economic systems, and companies. Federal authorities remain vigilant in addressing these challenges while working towards bringing those responsible for cybercrimes to justice.
