US Arrests Turkish Businessman Taskin Torlak for Allegedly Aiding Venezuela in Evasion of Sanctions

A Turkish businessman, Taskin Torlak, was detained in Miami on Monday. He faces charges of aiding Venezuela's state oil company in bypassing US sanctions. The Justice Department reported that Torlak, 37, was apprehended while trying to return to Turkey. Court documents reveal that he managed several firms involved in shipping sanctioned oil.

Starting in 2020, Torlak allegedly collaborated with unnamed partners and companies from countries like Ukraine, China, and Indonesia. Their goal was to transport Venezuelan crude oil despite Western buyers avoiding the country due to US sanctions against President Nicolas Maduro. These sanctions were intended to pressure Maduro out of power.

To avoid detection, Torlak and his associates reportedly concealed the identities of transaction beneficiaries. This tactic allowed US banks to unknowingly process payments related to the illegal oil shipments. "We could use one of the clean names to avoid money getting stuck somewhere," Torlak allegedly communicated with a co-conspirator.

Methods of Concealment

The oil tankers chartered for these operations often turned off their automated tracking systems. This system is a crucial safety device that helps in monitoring vessel locations. Additionally, they frequently changed the vessels' registry to fly flags of convenience, further masking their activities.

Efforts to locate an attorney for Torlak have been unsuccessful so far. The US began intensifying sanctions on Venezuela after Maduro's re-election in 2018. This election barred several key opponents from running, raising questions about its legitimacy.

Maduro has since tightened his control over Venezuela and claimed victory in a third six-year term this year. His opponents presented evidence suggesting the election was rigged. In response, the US imposed more sanctions on officials accused of obstructing the vote and committing human rights violations.

Assistant Attorney General Matthew G. Olsen stated, "The Justice Department will continue to hold accountable those involved in criminal efforts to circumvent sanctions imposed on the Maduro regime." This reflects the ongoing commitment to enforce sanctions against those supporting Maduro's government.
