UN Calls on Belarus to Investigate Torture, Deaths of Political Prisoners

United Nations special representatives on human rights have issued a call to the Belarusian government, urging an investigation into the torture and deaths of political prisoners within the country. A detailed report by the UN special rapporteur for Belarus highlights the demise of five individuals in custody, all convicted on charges believed to be politically motivated. The absence of autopsies for any of the deceased has raised serious concerns, suggesting a potential arbitrary deprivation of life by state authorities.

UN: Probe Belarus Prisoner Deaths

The report demands that Belarusian officials initiate prompt and transparent investigations into these custodial deaths. It also expresses deep concern for the well-being of several imprisoned Belarusian opposition figures, lawyers, and activists, whose locations have been unknown for over a year. According to data from the Viasna human rights center, Belarus currently holds 1,401 political prisoners, including Nobel Peace Prize laureate Ales Bialiatski.

Conditions within Belarusian detention facilities have come under severe criticism in the UN report. It outlines how political prisoners face torture and other forms of cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment. Disturbingly, these individuals are reportedly marked with a special yellow identifier, frequently placed in solitary confinement, and cut off from communication with the outside world.

The backdrop to these violations is President Alexander Lukashenko's aggressive suppression of dissent following the 2020 election, which he claimed to have won amidst widespread allegations of fraud by the opposition and international observers. The UN document accuses Belarusian authorities of conducting a deliberate campaign to dismantle civil society in the aftermath of Lukashenko's contested victory.

The report concludes with a stark warning about the dire human rights situation in Belarus, emphasizing the urgent need for continued international scrutiny. This call to action underscores the critical state of political freedoms in the country and the imperative for immediate and comprehensive investigations into human rights abuses.
