UN Reports Significant Influx of Humanitarian Aid into Gaza Amid Ceasefire

The United Nations humanitarian coordinator in Gaza reported that aid trucks from various sources are arriving, with only minor looting incidents noted. On Tuesday, nearly 900 aid trucks entered Gaza, surpassing the 600 trucks initially agreed upon. Muhannad Hadi, who returned to Jerusalem from Gaza, expressed joy at seeing Palestinians hopeful and beginning to clean up their surroundings.

UN Confirms Aid Flowing into Gaza

Hadi shared that during his interactions with families at a UN World Food Programme communal kitchen, they expressed a desire for self-sufficiency. They wish to return home, work, and earn money instead of relying on aid. Education for children and necessities like shelter, blankets, and clothing are also priorities for them.

Challenges in Aid Distribution

Despite the ceasefire, logistical challenges persist in Gaza. Roads are damaged, complicating the movement of aid trucks and people. Hadi mentioned that some individuals attempted to take food and water from trucks, but these were not organised criminal acts. He hopes such incidents will cease as people realise there is enough aid for everyone.

Hadi highlighted the need for early recovery programmes, starting with cash-for-work initiatives to clear rubble. However, restoring the banking system and electricity is crucial for these efforts. The involvement of UN member states and the private sector is vital in this recovery phase.

Community Resilience and Future Plans

Palestinians are eager to resume normal life despite knowing their homes are destroyed. Hadi recounted how some said they would return to live on the rubble if they received tents. A shipment of tents is expected soon to assist those displaced.

Lawlessness is common in war situations, but with the ceasefire, there is hope for restoring order in Gaza. Hadi emphasised that minor looting incidents were not orchestrated by criminals targeting UN convoys during the conflict.

The UN aims to support Gaza's recovery by ensuring essential services are operational again. This includes addressing logistical issues and coordinating with various stakeholders to facilitate aid distribution efficiently.
