UN Criticises Greece for Lack of Investigation into Deadly Migrant Shipwreck

On the first anniversary of one of the Mediterranean Sea's most devastating migrant shipwrecks, the United Nations refugee and migration agencies, UNHCR and IOM, have expressed their dissatisfaction with Greece's efforts to clarify the events that led to the tragedy on June 14, 2023. The incident, which occurred off southern Greece, resulted in the loss of hundreds of lives. Despite the initiation of investigations by Greek authorities, there has been no communication of any findings that establish the facts surrounding the incident.

UN Slams Greece Over Shipwreck Probe

The call for a "comprehensive and conclusive" investigation by UNHCR and IOM underscores the urgency and importance of understanding what transpired to ensure justice for survivors and the families of the deceased. This tragedy not only highlights the perilous journey migrants undertake but also raises questions about the response of Greek coast guards, who have faced widespread criticism from migrant charities and rights groups for their handling of the situation.

The Adriana, a dilapidated metal fishing vessel smuggling up to 750 migrants from Libya to Italy, sank 75 kilometres (45 miles) off the town of Pylos in international waters. With only 104 survivors, allegations have surfaced from survivors that a botched attempt by the Greek coast guard to tow the vessel contributed to its sinking—a claim strongly denied by Greek officials.

In response to this tragedy, protests were organized in central Athens and Thessaloniki by left-wing groups and included some survivors. Participants carried banners adorned with photographs of those who perished, marking a somber reminder of the lives lost.

Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have also voiced their concerns, calling for "a credible process for accountability" on Thursday. The lack of progress in investigating the potential liability of Greece's Coast Guard has been criticized as "unconscionable" by HRW official Judith Sunderland. Despite these calls for accountability, a naval court's preliminary investigation has yet to release any findings, and Greece's state ombudsman initiated a separate probe in November 2023.

As Greece remains a primary gateway for individuals from the Middle East, Africa, and Asia seeking a better life in the European Union, this tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by migrants. The demand for a thorough investigation by UN agencies is not only about securing justice but also about preventing similar tragedies in the future.
