Ukrainian Frontline in Peril: Ammunition Crisis Threatens Defense
Ukraines hold on a 1,000-kilometer frontline is at risk due to dwindling ammunition supplies, leading to the withdrawal from Avdiivka. The situation underscores the urgency for Congressional approval of $60 billion in military aid to bolster Ukraines defense against relentless Russian artillery assaults.
The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has taken a critical turn as the country's forces face dwindling ammunition supplies, jeopardizing their hold on a vast 1,000-kilometer frontline under relentless Russian artillery assault. The situation has become so dire that Ukrainian troops were forced to withdraw from the strategic city of Avdiivka in the Donetsk region, a stronghold that had served as a crucial defense against Russian advances.

Loss of Avdiivka: A Blow to Ukrainian Morale
The loss of Avdiivka marks a significant setback for Ukraine and a boost to Russian morale. The city, a frontline stronghold since Russia's initial invasion in 2014, was heavily fortified with a network of trenches and tunnels, serving as a protective barrier for vital logistical hubs further west. Its capture not only bolsters Russian morale but also underscores the Kremlin's troops' growing dominance in the conflict, overshadowing the incremental gains made by Ukrainian forces during their counteroffensive last year.
Congressional Inaction Hampers Military Aid
The Biden administration has linked the loss of Avdiivka to the delay in Congressional approval of a substantial USD 60 billion military aid package for Ukraine. President Joe Biden expressed confidence during a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that the funding would eventually materialize. However, when pressed by reporters about the urgency of securing the aid before Ukraine loses more territory, Biden admitted his uncertainty.
Ammunition Shortages: A Growing Crisis
Interviews conducted by The Associated Press with numerous commanders, including artillery unit leaders, revealed the acute shortages that have plagued Ukrainian forces, particularly in the most intense combat zones. Despite persistent supply issues since the full-scale invasion, the situation worsened last autumn. The dwindling supplies of Western-supplied long-range artillery, in particular, have severely limited Ukraine's ability to strike high-value targets deep within Russian lines, where heavy equipment and personnel are concentrated.
Across the frontline, Ukrainian forces have been grappling with critical ammunition shortages, with some artillery batteries operating with a mere 10% of their required supply. In a desperate attempt to conserve shells, military leaders have ordered units to target only precise objectives. However, commanders on the ground express frustration, as these measures prove insufficient in deterring their better-equipped adversaries. Concerns are mounting that without immediate military aid, the fall of Avdiivka could be replicated in other vulnerable sectors of the frontline.
A Victory for Moscow: Implications and Objectives
The withdrawal of Ukrainian soldiers from Avdiivka handed Russia its most significant victory since the battle of Bakhmut last year. This strategic gain paves the way for the Kremlin's troops to advance further west, deeper into Ukrainian-held territory, exploiting less-fortified areas. Military analysts suggest that Pokrovsk, a crucial railway junction further east, could be the next Russian objective.
Russian military officials and war bloggers have emphasized that the capture of Avdiivka significantly reduces the threat to the Russian-held city of Donetsk. This development underscores the strategic importance of Avdiivka and its role in protecting Ukrainian-held territories.
Economizing Shells: A Struggle for Survival
Commanders on the frontline paint a grim picture of the ammunition deficit. Khorobryi, an artillery battery commander, laments the severe shortage, stating that despite promises of more supplies, they have yet to materialize. With only 5-10% of the necessary ammunition, their ability to effectively attack and reclaim territories is severely compromised. Even more concerning is the loss of Ukrainian fighters due to the inability to provide covering fire for infantry units.
Valerie, who commands a howitzer unit, echoes these concerns. To effectively repel Russian attacks, they require 100-120 shells per unit per day. However, their current supply falls drastically short, with only a tenth of what is needed. This dire situation leaves Ukrainian forces vulnerable and unable to mount effective counterattacks.
Russia's Tactical Shift: Exploiting Ammunition Shortages
Ukrainian soldiers stationed in Avdiivka revealed a tactical shift employed by Russian forces to capitalize on their ammunition shortages. Instead of deploying large columns of armed vehicles, Moscow's forces have adopted a strategy of sending waves of smaller infantry groups to engage Ukrainian forces in close combat. This tactic requires Ukrainian forces to expend significantly more ammunition to keep the enemy at bay.
Chaklun, a soldier in the 110th Brigade, acknowledges the enemy's understanding of their capabilities and their exploitation of these weaknesses to achieve success.
A Fragile North: Concerns for Other Frontlines
Concerns are growing about the impact of ammunition shortages on other sectors of the frontline. The Kupiansk line in Ukraine's northeast is particularly vulnerable. Russia has intensified attacks in this region for months, aiming to recapture the crucial logistics hub lost in the fall of 2022. Yuri, the commander of the 44th Brigade in Kupiansk, expresses frustration over the inability to strike Russian targets due to insufficient ammunition, despite spotting them through aerial reconnaissance.
Oleksandr, the commander of a battalion of the 32nd Brigade in Kupiansk, acknowledges having just enough shells for the moment. However, he emphasizes that the sustainability of their defense hinges on the intensity of Russian attacks. If the Russians escalate their efforts, he fears that their current supplies will be insufficient to hold the line.
As the conflict in Ukraine rages on, the dwindling ammunition supplies pose a grave threat to the country's ability to defend its territory and repel Russian advances. Urgent action is needed from international allies to provide the necessary military aid and ensure that Ukraine has the resources to effectively counter Russian aggression.
