UK PM's Diwali Party Stirs Controversy With Meat And Alcohol On The Menu

The Diwali celebration hosted by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street has stirred controversy within the British Hindu community.

Some attendees were shocked to discover that the dinner menu included alcohol and non-vegetarian dishes, such as lamb kebabs, beer, and wine items considered inappropriate by many Hindus during the sacred festival.

The event, which featured traditional elements like lighting diyas, a Kuchipudi dance performance, and a speech by Starmer, was meant to honour the Diwali festivities. However, the inclusion of meat and liquor at the gathering has raised concerns over a lack of cultural sensitivity.

Prominent British Hindu figures, including Satish K Sharma, a well-known pandit, voiced their disappointment. Sharma criticized the Prime Minister's office for what he called a "complete lack of sensitivity and simple consultation." He pointed out that for the past 14 years, Diwali celebrations at 10 Downing Street had avoided meat and alcohol, a practice in line with the religious sentiments of many Hindus.

Sharma expressed his shock, stating, "It's a tragedy that the Prime Minister's advisers would have been so careless and negligent." He called for a public statement from Starmer, questioning whether the choice of menu was accidental or intentional.

The movement Insight UK, representing British Hindus and Indians, also expressed dismay, describing the event as "marred by meat and alcohol." They offered to advise the Prime Minister's office on how to better respect religious traditions during future celebrations.

While 10 Downing Street has yet to comment on the controversy, many are calling for greater awareness and consideration of the cultural and religious practices of the Hindu community in official events.
