UK PM Starmer Pledges Support for Ukraine at First NATO Summit

Newly elected British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is making his debut on the international stage by attending the NATO summit in Washington. He met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, where they shared a warm embrace before holding private discussions. Starmer reaffirmed Britain's unwavering support for Ukraine in its fight against Russia's invasion.

Starmer Supports Ukraine at NATO

Starmer emphasised that his new Labour government would work with allies to ensure NATO's support for Ukraine is solidified. He stressed the importance of reinforcing NATO's resolve against Russian aggression, noting that the alliance is now more united and stronger than ever.

Strengthening Transatlantic Ties

Starmer is also scheduled to meet one-on-one with President Joe Biden. Both leaders are expected to reaffirm the "special relationship" between the US and Britain, which has been a cornerstone of transatlantic cooperation for over a century. At the summit's arrival ceremony, Biden and Starmer shared a notably extended handshake.

Starmer left London after securing a landslide victory on July 4. He conveyed a message of renewed engagement from the UK, stating, "We're back," following years of political turmoil over Brexit. His plans focus on security, encompassing the economy, energy, and defence.

Commitment to Defence and Security

Starmer has pledged to increase UK defence spending to 2.5% of GDP from the current 2.3%. However, he has not specified when this will happen, unlike the previous Conservative government, which aimed for 2030. The Conservatives had also overseen cuts to the UK armed forces during their 14-year tenure.

The new prime minister intends to review defence strategy and spending before setting a date for achieving the 2.5% target. This review process could take up to a year. Starmer has transformed the Labour Party since taking over in 2020 from Jeremy Corbyn, who was critical of NATO and opposed Britain's nuclear-armed submarines.

Labour's National Security Stance

Starmer now positions Labour as "the party of national security," with a firm commitment to NATO and a promise to maintain Britain's nuclear arsenal. Victoria Honeyman, an associate professor at the University of Leeds, noted that Starmer aims to establish himself as a credible international statesman and counter conservative criticisms of Labour's security policies.

"Keir Starmer at the moment doesn't really need to make a big splash," Honeyman said. "He needs to create goodwill, make friends, and build political capital." Despite focusing on making a strong impression on the Biden administration, Starmer and his team are also preparing for the potential return of Donald Trump.

Preparing for Potential Political Shifts

The new government insists that the transatlantic "special relationship" transcends individual leaders. However, some of Starmer's priorities, such as combating climate change and promoting clean energy, may not align with Trump's views. In his comments at the NATO summit, Starmer highlighted the importance of these issues to his government.

New Foreign Secretary David Lammy has been meeting with Republicans and Trump allies over recent months. Lammy once called Trump a "neo Nazi-sympathising sociopath," but later clarified that Trump's stance on NATO was misunderstood. Lammy believes Trump wanted Europeans to contribute more to their own defence rather than abandoning them.

In a meeting with Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Lammy praised the partnership between the UK and US. "The special relationship means something, not just for our own countries but for the defence of freedom across the globe," he said. Blinken echoed these sentiments, stating, "This is not only a special relationship; it is an essential one."

Starmer's meetings at the summit aim to reset relationships and assert Britain's leadership on key issues like defence, security, climate change, and energy. His approach underscores his commitment to strengthening international alliances and addressing global challenges collaboratively.
