UK General Election on July 4?
Major news outlets, including the BBC, ITV, Sky News, and The Guardian, have indicated that the election date is expected to be announced by Sunak in an official Downing Street statement following the cabinet meeting.
The reports have neither been confirmed nor denied by Sunak's office, which has refused to "rule anything in or out," further fueling speculation that the general election might be scheduled for this summer, as reported by Hindustan Times.
Constitutionally, a national election must be held in the United Kingdom by January 2025, and Prime Minister Sunak has repeatedly stated that it would take place in the latter half of 2024.
Earlier today, when responding to a lawmaker's inquiry about a possible summer vote, it was said by Sunak, "Spoiler alert: There is going to be a general election in the second half of this year."
This election will mark the first time Sunak, aged 44, will face the electorate as Prime Minister. He was appointed leader of the Conservative Party in October 2022 following an internal vote. The upcoming vote will be the third general election since the Brexit referendum in 2016.
According to pre-poll surveys, the Conservatives are widely expected to be defeated by the opposition Labour Party after 14 years in power. Before the announcement, Labour had stated that it was fully prepared for an election. "We are fully ready to go whenever the prime minister calls an election. A fully organised and operational campaign is ready to go, and we believe the country is eager for a general election," a spokesperson for Labour leader Starmer told reporters.
