UAE Team Emirates Vows to Revolutionize Cycling with Net-Zero Ambitions by 2030
UAE Team Emirates, a leading professional cycling team, has committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. This initiative reflects the team's dedication to environmental responsibility, setting a precedent in the world of sports for sustainable practices and proactive carbon neutral initiatives.
In a significant stride towards environmental responsibility, Mauro Gianetti, CEO and Team Principal of UAE Team Emirates, addressed attendees at the COP28 event held in Dubai, revealing the cycling team's ambitious target to go net-zero by the year 2030. As the first Professional Cycling Team to attain Carbon Neutrality—a milestone reached at the culmination of the 2023 season—the team has positioned itself as a pioneer in the realm of sustainable sports.
Commitment to Sustainability
Gianetti, sharing insights at the FAB Pavilion, emphasized that the inception of UAE Team Emirates was always intended to go beyond the scope of competitive cycling to become an agent of positive transformation. "Our team has always aimed to be more than a contender for titles; we envisioned it as a catalyst for impactful social change," Gianetti explained. He elaborated on the numerous health and wellness initiatives already underway that promote cycling, adding that the team is now poised to augment these efforts by aligning with the UAE's decarbonization goals through a substantial sustainability program.

Net-Zero Strategy
UAE Team Emirates' strategy to reach net-zero carbon emissions involves a consistent annual reduction of its greenhouse gas emissions. The team's comprehensive plan focuses on significantly lowering CO2 emissions across its activities. This includes refining travel logistics, reducing waste, and incorporating cutting-edge energy-saving technologies. This active commitment to environmental stewardship will also involve community engagement campaigns aimed at raising environmental consciousness among cycling enthusiasts and the broader public.
Riders as Sustainability Ambassadors
The sustainability journey is a shared venture for the UAE Team Emirates staff and its cyclists, who take immense pride in their contributions to the initiative. The cyclists are not only instrumental in the team's efforts to minimize carbon emissions but also serve as sustainability champions. Their role extends to educating the public, particularly the youth, thereby fostering a collective support for global environmental sustainability movements.
As part of their ongoing commitment, UAE Team Emirates undertook a third-party audit to assess their carbon footprint accurately. Through the application of the Financial Control Approach, the team calculated both its direct and indirect (Scope 1 and Scope 2) greenhouse gas emissions for the 2022 season, which amounted to a sizable 224,980 CO2 TON.
Proactive Carbon Neutral Initiatives
In response to the findings, the team has embarked on a retrospective mission to compensate for these emissions. This includes the launch of carbon-neutral activities, forming strategic partnerships, and developing programs designed to mitigate, reduce, or even eliminate greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. To date, UAE Team Emirates is actively involved in five international projects, which are instrumental to the team's certification as a Carbon Neutral Company.
In conclusion, the UAE Team Emirates' commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2030 stands as a testament to the UAE's dedication to fostering a sustainable future. By embedding eco-friendly practices within their operations and leveraging their platform to influence positive change, the team is not only leading the charge in the sporting world but is also contributing to the global effort against climate change. This initiative by the UAE Team Emirates is a shining example of how sports can serve as a powerful conduit for environmental activism and inspire widespread action towards a greener planet.
