Twelve People Killed in Coordinated Attacks Amid Ongoing Violence in Salamanca, Mexico

A series of coordinated attacks in Salamanca, a city plagued by violence in central Mexico's Guanajuato state, resulted in the deaths of 12 individuals. The victims were discovered on Thursday at various locations in the city, which has a population exceeding 200,000. In one instance, a banner signed by a drug cartel was found alongside some of the bodies.

Coordinated Attacks Kill Twelve in Salamanca

The recent massacre is part of an ongoing wave of violence in Salamanca, located west of Guanajuato's capital. Earlier in the week, gunmen attacked a drug rehabilitation centre, killing four men and injuring two others. Authorities have yet to identify any suspects and continue their investigation into these incidents.

Drug Cartel Conflict

Guanajuato has been a battleground for years between the Jalisco New Generation Cartel and the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel. This conflict has made Guanajuato the state with the highest number of homicides in Mexico. Security analyst David Saucedo explained that while Jalisco controls urban areas, Santa Rosa de Lima dominates rural regions. However, both groups are vying for control over cities like Salamanca.

Despite the presence of the National Guard, violence persists in Salamanca. Saucedo highlighted that the city has seen three different police directors in as many years, indicating a struggle to combat organised crime effectively. "Salamanca has a very complicated situation," he noted.

Authorities' Response

Salamanca Mayor César Prieto Gallardo acknowledged that city and state authorities are working together to address the issue. He remarked, "This is a conflict between delinquent groups. The civil population has nothing to do with this." His statement underscores the ongoing efforts to manage the violence without implicating innocent residents.

The industrial and agricultural state of Guanajuato remains embroiled in this bloody turf war. The struggle for dominance between these powerful cartels continues to impact daily life in Salamanca and surrounding areas.

The investigation into these violent events is ongoing, with authorities striving to bring those responsible to justice. The situation remains tense as officials work to restore peace and security in this troubled region.
