‘Turn the Volume Up’: Zohran Mamdani’s Bold Message to Donald Trump

Zohran Mamdani, the newly elected mayor of New York City, delivered a powerful victory speech targeting US President Donald Trump. Mamdani, who once called himself Trump's "worst nightmare," reminded Trump that the city that "gave rise to him" could also defeat him. His win is seen as a new beginning for New York City.

During his speech, Mamdani directly addressed Trump, a vocal critic of his, saying, "Donald Trump, since I know you are watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up." He emphasized that New York could show a nation betrayed by Trump how to overcome him. The auditorium erupted with chants of 'Zohran, Zohran' as he spoke.

Historic Win and Challenges Ahead

Mamdani's victory is historic as he becomes the first Muslim and Indian-origin mayor of New York City. This marks a significant electoral setback for Trump during his second presidency. In the 2024 presidential elections, New York City showed a shift towards Republican support despite being a Democratic stronghold.

The Uganda-born Mamdani moved to New York at age seven and has been outspoken against Trump. He criticized Trump's threats to withdraw funds from the city if he won. Trump even endorsed Andrew Cuomo, a former Democratic governor and adversary of Mamdani, in the mayoral race.

Defiance and Vision for Change

Mamdani's campaign focused on affordability and change. He refused to apologise for his identity as a young Muslim democratic socialist. "I am young, I am Muslim, I am a democratic socialist and most damning of all I refuse to apologise for any of this," he declared.

He quoted Jawaharlal Nehru to highlight hope and change: "A moment comes but rarely in history when we step out from the old to the new." Mamdani pledged universal child care, fast and free buses, and rent freeze policies amid applause from supporters.

Mamdani vowed to hold landlords accountable and end corruption that benefits billionaires like Trump. He stated that wealthy individuals have become too comfortable exploiting tenants and evading taxes through loopholes.
