Turkish Astronaut Soars to Space in Historic SpaceX Mission
In a groundbreaking mission, Turkeys first astronaut, Alper Gezeravci, embarks on a chartered SpaceX flight to the International Space Station, accompanied by an international crew. This historic journey marks a new era in space exploration and international collaboration.
In a historic moment for Turkey, its first astronaut, Alper Gezeravci, embarked on a journey to the International Space Station (ISS) on Thursday, January 19, 2023. Accompanying Gezeravci were Swedish astronaut Marcus Wandt and Italian astronaut Walter Villadei, all of whom possess extensive military pilot experience. The trio's mission, organized by Axiom Space in collaboration with NASA and SpaceX, marks the third such private spaceflight.

A Milestone for Turkey
Gezeravci, a former fighter pilot and captain for Turkish Airlines, holds the distinction of being the first Turkish citizen to venture into space. This momentous occasion coincides with Turkey's recent celebration of its 100th anniversary, adding a profound layer of significance to the mission. Gezeravci expressed his excitement about the opportunity to expand Turkey's horizons beyond the limitations of the naked eye, viewing it as the beginning of a new era for the nation.
International Collaboration and Shared Experiences
Joining Gezeravci on this mission are Wandt, a former fighter pilot and test pilot from Sweden, and Villadei, an Italian Air Force Colonel who previously flew to the edge of space with Virgin Galactic. The astronauts will carry symbolic items representing their respective countries, including a Nobel Prize medal from Sweden, fusilli pasta from Italy, and tokens of Turkey's nomadic culture. Accompanying them is Michael Lopez-Alegria, a former NASA astronaut who now works for Axiom Space and is serving as the escort for this chartered flight.
A Two-Week Mission of Exploration and Discovery
During their two-week stay on the ISS, the astronauts will engage in a variety of activities, including conducting experiments, interacting with schoolchildren, and capturing breathtaking views of Earth from their unique vantage point. Their mission represents a significant milestone in international collaboration and the expansion of human presence in space.
The launch of Turkey's first astronaut, along with his Swedish and Italian counterparts, marks a pivotal moment in space exploration. This chartered SpaceX flight, organized by Axiom Space, underscores the growing accessibility of space travel and the potential for international cooperation in scientific research and exploration.
