Trump's Gold Card Offer For Immigrants: How Different It Is From Green Card? Know Key Differences

In a major initiative to boost investment, President Donald Trump has come up with a plan to offer a "gold card" visa.

Trump's Big Announcement

According to him, it is a path to citizenship for wealthy investors and it will replace a 35-year-old Green Card's EB-5 program.

Trump s Gold Card Offer For Immigrants How Different It Is From Green Card Know Key Differences

"They'll be wealthy and they'll be successful, and they'll be spending a lot of money and paying a lot of taxes and employing a lot of people, and we think it's going to be extremely successful," PTI quoted Trump as saying in the Oval Office on Tuesday. Later,Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick added that the Gold Card would replace EB-5 visas in two weeks.

In order to attract investment, the US had launched EB-5s which allowed people to spend USD1 million on a company that employs at least 10 people.

Lutnick claimed that the gold card - actually a green card, or permanent legal residency - would raise the price of admission for investors.

As per the Homeland Security Department's most recent Yearbook of Immigration Statistics, About 8,000 people obtained investor visas in the 12-month period ending Sept. 30, 2022.

In 2021, the Congressional Research Service has highlighted the risks of fraud associated with investor visa programs, particularly in verifying the legal source of funds. Expanding such a program on a massive scale could exacerbate these risks, requiring robust oversight mechanisms to prevent abuse.

Gold Card Vs Green Card

Trump's proposal, as described, does not explicitly mention job creation, which could be a point of contention. Let's understand the key difference between a Gold Card and a Green Card.

A Green Card is the permanent resident card issued by the U.S. government, allowing a foreign national to live and work in the United States indefinitely. The Gold Card is a new immigration initiative introduced by Donald Trump, allowing wealthy foreign investors to purchase a direct pathway to U.S. citizenship for $5 million.

Green Card (Permanent Resident Card)

Purpose: Grants permanent residency to immigrants, allowing them to live and work in the U.S.
Eligibility: Can be obtained through family sponsorship, employment, investment (EB-5), refugee/asylum status, or diversity visa lottery.
Investment Option: The EB-5 visa requires an investment of $800,000 to $1.05 million in a U.S. business that must create at least 10 jobs.
Path to Citizenship: Green card holders can apply for U.S. citizenship after 5 years (3 years if married to a U.S. citizen).
Work Requirement: Green card holders must maintain a primary residence in the U.S. and not stay outside the country for extended periods.

Gold Card (Trump's New Proposal - 2025)

Purpose: Provides an instant pathway to U.S. citizenship for wealthy individuals willing to pay $5 million.
Eligibility: No job creation or business investment is required-only a one-time payment.
Investment Requirement: Just a $5 million payment to the U.S. government, unlike the Green Card's EB-5 program, which mandates investment in a business.
Path to Citizenship: Direct path to U.S. citizenship without waiting for years.
Residency Requirement: Less restrictive compared to traditional Green Card holders.

Key Takeaways:

  • Green Card requires a valid reason to immigrate (family, work, investment, or humanitarian grounds), while Gold Card is a pay-to-citizenship scheme.
  • Gold Card is only for the ultra-rich who can afford $5 million, whereas the Green Card is open to many categories of immigrants.
  • The Green Card process can take years, while the Gold Card offers a fast-track route to citizenship.
