Trump Vows to Reverse Biden's Ban on Offshore Drilling on First Day in Office

Donald Trump, the President-elect, expressed dissatisfaction on Tuesday regarding President Joe Biden's recent actions. Biden, whose term ends in two weeks, has prohibited offshore energy drilling in most federal waters. This decision affects areas along the East and West coasts, the eastern Gulf of Mexico, and parts of Alaska's Northern Bering Sea.

Trump to Reverse Bidens Offshore Drilling Ban

Trump criticised Biden's move as a hindrance to his future plans. "I'm going to put it back on day one," Trump stated at his Florida club. He also mentioned the possibility of taking legal action if necessary. Trump's remarks came after Biden used the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act to protect approximately 625 million acres from future oil and gas leasing.

Transition Challenges and Cooperation

Despite Trump's complaints about the transition process, Biden's team has been cooperative. They have extended access and courtesies to Trump's team, which Trump initially denied Biden after the 2020 election. Susie Wiles, Trump's incoming chief of staff, acknowledged Biden's chief of staff Jeff Zients for being "very helpful."

Trump also criticised special counsel Jack Smith's work. Smith oversaw now-dropped prosecutions related to Trump's role in the January 6 Capitol insurrection and possession of classified documents post-presidency. The Justice Department is expected to release a report summarising Smith's investigation soon.

Proposed Changes and Legal Actions

In addition to reversing Biden's offshore drilling ban, Trump proposed renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America." He believes this name has a "beautiful ring to it." These comments reflect Trump's broader agenda as he prepares to assume office.

Biden's decision to withdraw federal waters from energy exploration may require congressional action to reverse. This move is part of a series of final actions by Biden's administration before leaving office. Trump views these actions as undermining his upcoming presidency.

The transition period between administrations often involves challenges and cooperation. While Trump has voiced concerns about the current process, efforts have been made by both sides to ensure a smooth transition. The upcoming release of Smith's report will likely provide further insights into past investigations involving Trump.
