Trump's Use of AI to Forge Celebrity Endorsements Marks New Political Tactic

Former President Donald Trump has been actively posting on his social media accounts as Democrats gather for their convention in Chicago. However, some of his posts are not grounded in reality. Ahead of the Democratic National Convention, he shared a fake image depicting Vice President Kamala Harris addressing a supposed communist rally in Chicago, featuring a red banner with a communist symbol.

Trumps AI-Forged Endorsements

Trump also reposted a phony video showing him dancing next to billionaire Elon Musk, one of his vocal supporters. Just before the convention began, he shared an image of Taylor Swift dressed as Uncle Sam and falsely claimed her endorsement for his campaign. These actions are part of Trump's strategy to use AI-generated content to attack opponents and create illusions of support for his campaign.

AI-Generated Content Concerns

Experts are worried about the rise of AI-generated content on political social media. They argue that such content can spread believable disinformation and erode trust in what people see and hear online. Lisa Gilbert, co-president of Public Citizen, stated, "The AI-generated deepfakes of Taylor Swift are yet another example of AIs power to create misinformation that deceives and defrauds voters."

One AI-generated image posted by Trump on Truth Social showed women wearing "Swifties for Trump" shirts, referencing Swift's devoted fans. Another fake image depicted Swift dressed as Uncle Sam with text saying, "Taylor wants YOU to VOTE for DONALD TRUMP." Trump added, "I accept!" when reposting this image.

Political Implications

Political operatives have long been concerned about the implications of artificial intelligence in elections. Some members of Congress have pushed for legislation to regulate AI-generated images in politics, but no such laws have been passed yet. The Federal Communications Commission has proposed requiring political advertisers to disclose their use of AI in TV and radio ads, but this would not affect social media platforms.

Despite rules for labeling AI-generated content on various social media platforms, these guidelines are not always followed. Misleading images of both Trump and Harris continue to amass millions of views, with some users failing to recognize their falsity.

Swift's Political Influence

Taylor Swift has often become a trending political topic during election years due to her influence and millions of fans. In 2020, she supported President Joe Biden and was openly critical of Trump, accusing him of stoking "the fires of white supremacy and racism." Although she has remained politically quiet this year, prominent conservatives worry about her potential endorsement of the Democratic presidential ticket.

Some Trump supporters have responded to his posts by declaring their intentions to vote for him. Trump's campaign is capitalizing on this support. Steven Cheung, Trump's spokesman, did not address the use of fake images but called "Swifties for Trump a massive movement that grows bigger every single day."

A Harris spokesperson did not respond to questions about Trump's use of AI-generated images. Meanwhile, Republicans outside Trump's circle believe that focusing on someone like Swift helps garner attention for Trump amid the Democratic convention.

Doug Heye, a longtime Republican spokesperson, commented on this strategy: "This is how he and the campaign can wrest back news cycles... if you want to be talked about, Taylor Swift is a great way to do it."

As AI-generated content continues to proliferate across social media platforms, its potential impact on elections remains a significant concern. The spread of such content risks undermining public trust in authentic information and could have wide-reaching consequences for society.

Swift's spokesperson did not return multiple messages seeking comment regarding her alleged endorsement or the fake images shared by Trump. She remains on her world tour with a show scheduled in London.

The increasing use of AI tools to create misleading political content highlights the urgent need for effective regulations and public awareness to combat disinformation.
