Trump Proposes Transforming G7 into G8 or G9 by Including Russia and China
During the Group of Seven summit, US President Donald Trump proposed including Russia and potentially China in the organisation. He suggested transforming the G7 into the G8 or even the G9, despite Russia and China being authoritarian states among democratic members. Trump's remarks added complexity to his upcoming meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict initiated by Russia's invasion.

Trump criticised the decision to expel Russia in 2014 after its annexation of Crimea, which led to a broader invasion of Ukraine in 2022. "I think you wouldn't have a war right now if you had Russia in, and you wouldn't have a war right now if Trump were president four years ago," he stated. "They threw Russia out, which I claimed was a very big mistake, even though I wasn't in politics then."
US Leadership and Global Diplomacy
The US president emphasised the importance of dialogue among world leaders at such summits. He mentioned that Russian President Vladimir Putin communicates with him but not with others due to feeling insulted after being excluded from the G8. "Putin speaks to me. He doesn't speak to anybody else," Trump noted.
When asked about China's potential inclusion, Trump responded positively, saying, "It's not a bad idea. I don't mind that if somebody wants to see just China coming in." This openness reflects his belief in maintaining communication channels with global powers.
Summit Dynamics and Tariff Tensions
Trump's comments came after discussions with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who hosted the summit in Kananaskis. Carney acknowledged the crucial role of US leadership within the G7, stating, "The G7 is nothing without US leadership." This remark highlights the significance of America's influence on global affairs.
The summit also addressed other pressing issues, including Trump's imposition of steep tariffs on numerous countries and the escalating tensions between Israel and Iran over Tehran's nuclear ambitions. These topics underscore the complex geopolitical landscape faced by world leaders.
Trump's suggestion to expand the G7 reflects his approach to international relations, prioritising dialogue even with nations outside traditional alliances. His stance on including Russia and China indicates a willingness to reshape global forums for broader engagement.
