Trump Nominates Old Critic JD Vance As GOP Running Mate

Donald Trump has selected Sen. JD Vance of Ohio as his running mate, marking a significant choice in the political landscape. Vance, who once criticised Trump, has become a staunch supporter and is now the first millennial on a major-party ticket amidst concerns about the age of America's political leaders.

"After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio," Trump announced on his Truth Social network.

Vance gained national recognition with his 2016 memoir "Hillbilly Elegy," which detailed life in Appalachian communities. He was elected to the Senate in 2022 and has been a vocal advocate for Trump's "Make America Great Again" agenda, focusing on trade, foreign policy, and immigration. Despite his support for Trump, Vance is relatively new to national politics and joins the ticket during a tumultuous period.

Impact on Trump's Campaign

The campaign has been shaken by an attempted assassination of Trump at a rally on Saturday. This incident has highlighted the harsh political rhetoric in the country and underscored the importance of those close to the presidency. Vance faced backlash for a post on X suggesting President Joe Biden was responsible for the violence.

"The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs," Vance wrote. "That rhetoric led directly to President Trump's attempted assassination." Law enforcement has not yet determined a motive for the shooting.

Vance's selection is expected to energise Trump's loyal base. He has become a regular on conservative media and often clashes with reporters on Capitol Hill, establishing himself as a leader who could carry Trump's legacy into future elections, including 2028. However, this choice also means that two white men will lead the Republican ticket at a time when Trump is trying to appeal to Black and Latino voters.

Vance's Political Journey

In "Hillbilly Elegy," Vance described how Appalachian communities felt disconnected from the Democratic Party. While the book was popular, it faced criticism for oversimplifying rural life and ignoring racism's role in modern politics. Vance's rise coincided with Trump's unexpected journey from reality TV star to Republican presidential nominee and president. Initially, Vance called Trump "a total fraud," "a moral disaster," and "America's Hitler." However, like many Republicans seeking relevance during Trump's tenure, Vance eventually changed his stance.

Vance admitted he was wrong about Trump’s presidency and became one of his most loyal defenders. "I didn't think he was going to be a good president," Vance told Fox News Channel recently. "He was a great president. And it's one of the reasons why I'm working so hard to make sure he gets a second term." This loyalty paid off during his 2022 Senate campaign when he received Trump's endorsement, helping him win both the Republican primary and general election.

Controversies and Criticisms

Vance has questioned the legitimacy of criminal prosecutions against Trump and disputed the results of the 2020 election. He told ABC News in February that if he had been vice president on January 6, 2021, he would have supported multiple slates of electors in states where Trump contested Biden's wins. "That is the legitimate way to deal with an election that a lot of folks, including me, think had a lot of problems in 2020," he said.

Despite these claims, judges and election officials from both parties found no evidence of widespread voter fraud in 2020. The relationship between Vance and Trump has been mutually beneficial. Vance's book provided insights into Trump's appeal in middle America, where job losses and opioid addiction have affected many families.

Personal Background

Vance's challenging childhood in Middletown, Ohio, and eastern Kentucky captivated Hollywood, leading to Ron Howard's 2020 film adaptation starring Amy Adams and Glenn Close.

With his grandmother's encouragement, Vance served in Iraq as part of the Marine Corps before graduating from Ohio State University and Yale Law School. He then worked at a Silicon Valley investment firm before returning to Ohio to start a nonprofit aimed at developing opioid addiction treatments.

However, his nonprofit, Our Ohio Renewal, failed to achieve its mission and closed down. During his Senate campaign, Democratic opponent Tim Ryan accused Vance’s charity of being a front for political ambitions rather than addressing addiction issues effectively. Vance denied these allegations.

As a senator, Vance has shown some bipartisan cooperation. He worked with Democrat Sherrod Brown on issues important to Ohio, such as securing funding for Intel’s $20 billion chip facility in central Ohio and introducing rail safety legislation following a derailment in East Palestine.

The selection of JD Vance as Trump's running mate brings both opportunities and challenges for their campaign as they navigate through this politically charged environment.
