Iran ceasefire on life support, Trump says, after rejecting Tehran proposal

US President Donald Trump said the ceasefire with Iran was at its weakest and on "massive life support" after he rejected Tehran’s proposal to end the war that began on 28 February. Speaking at the White House, he cited a planned meeting with senior generals as the conflict continues to disrupt global oil supplies.

US President Donald Trump said on Monday that the ceasefire with Iran looked close to collapsing. Trump made the comments at the Oval Office after rejecting Iran’s proposal to end the war. The conflict began on February 28 and later disrupted oil shipments. Trump said the truce was fragile and questioned Iran’s intent.

Trump spoke during a White House event on maternal healthcare. Trump asked speakers to keep comments brief due to an Iran meeting. Trump said a large group of generals was waiting. The remarks came one day after Trump reviewed Iran’s proposal. Trump said the document did not change the US position.

Trump told reporters, "It is at its weakest… After reading that piece of garbage they sent us... Its on life support, massive life support,\". Trump also said the ceasefire was \"unbelievably weak.\" Trump added that it was among the weakest he had seen. Trump said the proposal did not deserve more time. Trump said no pressure was influencing the US stance.

Trump also wrote on Truth Social on Sunday after receiving the Iranian proposal. Trump said, \"I have just read the response from Irans so-calledRepresentatives. I dont like it,\". Trump called the response totally unacceptable. On Monday, Trump again described the proposal as \"a piece of garbage\". Trump said the US would not wait for Iran to change course.

Trump said Iran expected the US to lose patience, but Trump rejected that idea. Trump said, \"Were going to have a complete victory,\". Trump added, \"I have the best plan ever.\" Trump said Iran had been defeated militarily. Trump said Iran still had some capacity left. Trump said the US could remove that quickly, if needed.

Trump said, \"Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon.\" Trump said Iran was \"very dangerous\" and \"very volatile\". Trump linked the issue to the wider talks on ending hostilities. Trump said the ceasefire weakened after the US read Iran’s message. Trump said the US did not finish reading the proposal. Trump repeated that the proposal did not meet expectations.

Trump Iran ceasefire talks and nuclear dust issue

Trump said Iran told him nuclear material was buried deep at its facilities. Trump said Iran claimed the US would need to dig out \"the nuclear dust\". Trump said the US had no clear method yet. Trump said he did not know how the US would enter Iran. Trump said the issue required more negotiation between the sides.

The US and Israel’s war on Iran began on February 28. Attacks paused on April 8 after the sides agreed to a ceasefire. The US and Iran continued negotiations for a lasting settlement. Progress remained limited. Pakistan hosted one round of direct talks on April 11. That meeting ended without an agreement between the two sides.

The US insisted Iran must commit to ending uranium enrichment. In return, the US offered sanctions relief and release of billions in frozen Iranian funds. Talks also covered the Strait of Hormuz blockade. The passage carries one-fifth of global crude supplies. The war had blocked the route and caused fuel shortages in several countries. Negotiators still had not secured durable peace.
