Is Trumo Administration Not Happy With Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir's Dual Roles In Iran Talks?

Fresh concerns are emerging within Washington's security establishment over the growing reliance on Asim Munir as a key intermediary in sensitive US engagements with Iran, with intelligence inputs suggesting his long-standing personal links to Tehran's military elite could complicate American strategic interests.

A report by Fox News, citing discussions within US intelligence circles, has flagged Munir as a potential liability for the administration of Donald Trump. The concerns centre on what are described as his deep and enduring relationships with senior Iranian figures, raising questions about his dual role as both interlocutor and regional power broker.

Retired Pakistani general Ahmed Saeed told Fox News Digital that Munir had maintained close personal ties with influential figures in Iran's military hierarchy, including the late Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) chief Hossein Salami. Such associations are now under sharper scrutiny as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate.

Munir has, in recent months, emerged as a crucial back-channel link between Washington and Tehran. While Trump has publicly praised him-at one point referring to him as his "favourite field marshal"-sections of the US intelligence community remain wary, warning that his positioning could blur lines of allegiance and potentially compromise American objectives.

The Fox report also revisits Pakistan's historical track record as an inconsistent ally, particularly during the Afghanistan conflict. Analysts have pointed to Islamabad's past approach-supporting the Taliban while receiving US assistance-as a cautionary precedent. Bill Roggio of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies argued that such history warrants scepticism, adding that Munir's links with the IRGC should be treated as a serious warning sign.

Experts believe Munir may be leveraging his rapport with Trump to position Pakistan as an indispensable intermediary in US-Iran dealings, even as questions persist over whether such a role could allow Islamabad to shape outcomes in its favour.

Within Pakistan, Munir's rise is being seen as part of a broader consolidation of military influence. Political analyst Raza Rumi noted that the army's dominance has increasingly eclipsed civilian authority, particularly since Munir took over as army chief in late 2022. Critics point to an intensified crackdown on dissent and the sidelining of former prime minister Imran Khan as evidence of this shift.

Fox News also highlighted Munir's remarks at the Margalla Dialogue in Islamabad in November 2024, where he cautioned that unregulated freedom of expression could erode societal values-comments that observers interpret as reflecting a preference for centralised control.

Despite these concerns, Trump continues to place significant trust in Munir. Their engagement reportedly deepened during the May 2025 India-Pakistan crisis, when Munir played a role in easing tensions. He is currently facilitating discreet communications between Trump's aides, including Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, and Iranian officials.

The issue remains contentious within the administration, underscoring a broader divide between Trump's reliance on personalised, strongman diplomacy and the intelligence community's more guarded assessment of Munir's regional alignments.
