Trump Revives Proposal To Make Canada The 51st State After Trudeau Resigns
In the wake of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's resignation, Donald Trump has once again revived his provocative proposal to make Canada the 51st state of the United States.
This offer comes amid Trump's continued criticism of Canada's trade practices and his longstanding contentious relationship with Trudeau, as reported by Hindustan Times.

Trudeau Resigns Amid Growing Pressure
Trudeau, 53, resigned on January 6, 2025, after facing mounting pressure from his own Liberal Party due to a sharp decline in his popularity. General elections are set to take place later this year, but Trudeau will remain in office until a new leader is elected within his party, as reported by Hindustan Times.
Trump's Renewed Offer for Statehood
Trump, who has often criticized Trudeau during his time in office (2017-2021), took to social media to make his offer following Trudeau's resignation. In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, "Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State. The United States can no longer suffer the massive trade deficits and subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this, and resigned."

Trump has been advocating for the idea of Canada joining the U.S. since his November 2024 victory at Mar-a-Lago, referencing the potential benefits, including lower taxes, no tariffs, and security from global threats. "If Canada merged with the U.S., there would be no tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be TOTALLY SECURE from the threat of Russian and Chinese ships surrounding them," Trump added.
Criticism of Canada's Trade Practices
Trump has frequently mocked Trudeau and referred to him as Canada's "governor" in public comments. He has also repeatedly criticized Canada's trade practices, alleging that they exploit the United States. Despite these claims, the proposal has not gained significant traction in Canada, as per media reports.
Trump has also issued threats, including imposing a 25% tariff on Canadian imports if the country fails to address issues such as illicit drug trafficking and illegal migration across its southern border.
Canada's Response
While Trump's remarks have sparked some debate, Canada has remained largely silent on his statehood proposal. It remains to be seen how the country will respond in the wake of Trudeau's resignation and Trump's renewed push for statehood.
Despite the lack of serious discussions on the matter, Trump's comments continue to reflect his long-standing belief in reforming trade relationships and reshaping international alliances in ways that benefit the United States.
