Trump Orders Tariffs and Visa Restrictions on Colombia Following Rejection of Deportation Flights
US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that he is imposing tariffs, visa restrictions, and other retaliatory actions against Colombia. This decision follows Colombia's refusal to accept two flights carrying deported migrants. Trump stated that these measures are crucial because Colombian President Gustavo Petro's actions have put US national security at risk.

Earlier on Sunday, President Petro declared that his administration would not accept migrant flights from the US until the Trump administration establishes a protocol ensuring respectful treatment. Petro shared this stance through two posts on X, one of which featured a video showing migrants reportedly deported to Brazil, restrained at their hands and feet while walking on a tarmac.
Colombian Migrant Protocols
"A migrant is not a criminal and must be treated with the dignity that a human being deserves," Petro stated. "That is why I returned the US military planes that were carrying Colombian migrants." He emphasised that Colombia would only receive its citizens in civilian aircraft and without treating them like criminals.
The US government has not yet responded to The Associated Press's request for comments regarding the aircraft and protocols used for deportations to Colombia. Meanwhile, Trump's administration continues to employ active-duty military personnel to secure the border and facilitate deportations as part of his campaign promises to curb illegal immigration.
Deportation Flights
Two Air Force C-17 cargo planes carrying migrants removed from the US landed in Guatemala early Friday. On the same day, Honduras received two deportation flights with a total of 193 individuals. These actions are part of Trump's broader strategy to address illegal immigration through stringent measures.
Trump expressed his firm stance on social media, stating, "These measures are just the beginning. We will not allow the Colombian Government to violate its legal obligations with regard to the acceptance and return of the Criminals they forced into the United States."
The situation remains tense as both countries navigate diplomatic challenges over migration policies. The focus is on finding a resolution that respects human rights while addressing security concerns effectively.
