Trump Threatens Reciprocal Tax Over India's High Tariffs

US President-elect Donald Trump has reaffirmed his plan to introduce reciprocal tariffs in response to what he describes as the "high tariff" imposed by India on certain American imports. "Reciprocal. If they tax us, we tax them the same amount. They tax us. We tax them. And they tax us. Almost in all cases, they're taxing us, and we haven't been taxing them," Trump stated to reporters on Monday.

During a news conference at Mar-a-Lago, Trump highlighted India and Brazil as nations imposing significant tariffs on US goods. He emphasised the importance of reciprocity, saying, "The word reciprocal is important because if somebody charges us — India, we don't have to talk about our own — if India charges us 100 per cent, do we charge them nothing for the same? You know, they send in a bicycle and we send them a bicycle. They charge us 100 and 200. India charges a lot. Brazil charges a lot. If they want to charge us, that's fine, but we're going to charge them the same thing."

Focus on Reciprocity

Trump's remarks came as he addressed questions about potential trade agreements with China. He reiterated that the US should impose equivalent tariffs on countries that levy high duties on American products. This stance is part of his broader trade policy aimed at ensuring fair treatment for US exports.

Howard Lutnick, Trump's choice for Commerce Secretary, also commented on the issue of reciprocity. He stated that "reciprocity" would be a central theme for the Trump administration's trade policies. "How you treat us is how you should expect to be treated," Lutnick remarked.

The emphasis on reciprocal tariffs reflects Trump's commitment to addressing trade imbalances with countries like India and Brazil. By advocating for equal treatment in trade relations, Trump aims to protect American industries from unfair foreign tariffs.

This approach underscores Trump's broader economic strategy of prioritising American interests in international trade negotiations. As he prepares to take office, these policies are likely to shape future US trade agreements and relations with key trading partners.
