President Donald Trump's proposal to impose tariffs on Europe over Greenland has alarmed many of America's allies. This move threatens to disrupt the NATO alliance, which has long been considered stable. The European Union's top official criticised Trump's tariff plans, calling them a "mistake" and questioning his reliability.

French President Emmanuel Macron suggested that the EU might retaliate using its significant economic tools, including the "trade bazooka." Trump is known for using pressure tactics in negotiations. He is scheduled to attend the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where he may attempt to ease tensions.

European Leaders Respond to Tariff Threats

European leaders are determined to support Denmark's control over Greenland. This stance could complicate Trump's efforts to resolve the crisis quickly. Greenland's leader emphasised the importance of respecting territorial integrity and international law, stating that these principles are not negotiable.

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, criticised Trump's announcement of a 10% import tax on goods from eight European nations supporting Denmark. She stressed that agreements between allies should be honoured and warned against actions that could benefit adversaries.

Potential EU Countermeasures

The EU is considering various responses, including retaliatory tariffs and using its anti-coercion instrument for the first time. Macron warned that additional tariffs might force the EU to deploy this mechanism against the US. He urged allied countries to focus on peace efforts instead.

Trump's insistence on acquiring Greenland has tested Europe's patience. He argues that US control is necessary to counter threats from China and Russia. Despite tensions, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent claimed that relations with Europe remain strong and urged calm among trading partners.

Greenland's Strategic Importance

Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen highlighted the need for respect in international relations. He expressed gratitude for EU support and emphasised Greenland's longstanding alliance with NATO and the US. Nielsen stated that cooperation must be based on mutual respect.

California Governor Gavin Newsom criticised Europe's response as weak and called for unity against US pressure. Meanwhile, Swedish Defence Minister Pal Jonson mentioned plans for a permanent military presence in the Arctic to ensure security, aligning with US demands.

US-UK Dispute Over Chagos Islands

Tensions have also arisen between the US and UK over the Chagos Islands. The UK defended its decision to transfer sovereignty to Mauritius, despite Trump's criticism. Trump argued that this decision highlights why he needs control over Greenland.

US House Speaker Mike Johnson addressed British lawmakers, expressing hope for resolving differences amicably. He emphasised the enduring friendship between the US and UK and their ability to work through disagreements peacefully.
