Trump Delays Tariffs for Some, Slaps China Hard: Full List of Countries With Revised Tariff Rates
In a significant policy shift, former US President Donald Trump announced a 90-day suspension on reciprocal tariffs for all nations except China. This pause comes just after fresh retaliatory measures from Beijing, prompting Trump to hike duties on Chinese goods to a staggering 125%.
While full details remain sparse, the administration confirmed that a baseline 10% tariff would still apply to most countries during this window. Following Trump's announcement, the stock market saw sharp gains.

"I have authorised a 90-day PAUSE, and a substantially lowered Reciprocal Tariff during this period, of 10%, also effective immediately," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The move came a day after sweeping new tariffs took effect against multiple trade partners, triggering heightened financial market volatility-the most intense since the early COVID-19 pandemic days.
Highlights of the Tariff Reversal:
1. What's the Immediate Impact?
Countries affected by the new reciprocal tariffs introduced Wednesday will now see duties revert to the prior 10% rate-excluding China. A White House official informed Bloomberg that existing tariffs on steel, aluminum, and cars remain unchanged.
Tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports will stay at 10% or 25%, barring items shielded by the North American trade agreement. EU imports, meanwhile, will face a 10% tariff, since the bloc's proposed retaliatory actions are yet to take effect.
2. Why China Faces Higher Tariffs
Trump justified the steeper duties on Chinese imports after Beijing announced retaliatory tariffs reaching 84% on American products. Calling out China's stance, he stated on social media:
"Given China's blatant disregard for global markets, the US is raising its tariff on Chinese goods to 125%, effective immediately."
Speaking to reporters later, Trump elaborated: "We've paused for those who didn't hit back. China retaliated, so we doubled it. Simple as that."
The White House echoed this sentiment on X (formerly Twitter), posting: "DO NOT RETALIATE AND YOU WILL BE REWARDED."
Beijing had earlier responded to US tariffs by raising its own from 34% to 84% on American exports, intensifying the trade standoff.
3. Trump Says China Is Open to Talks
Addressing the media, Trump claimed that China was interested in resolving the trade rift:
"China wants to make a deal. They just haven't figured out how yet."
Praising Chinese President Xi Jinping as "one of the smartest people in the world" and "a man who knows what needs to be done," Trump expressed confidence that negotiations would soon resume. "We'll get a call, and it'll be go-time," he said. "It'll benefit both sides, and frankly, the whole world."
4. Global Outreach Following the 90-Day Pause
According to Trump, over 75 nations have reached out to discuss trade terms after the pause was announced, choosing not to impose countermeasures in response to US tariffs.
Vietnam and the US have begun preliminary discussions on a potential trade pact. The UK has also opted for a measured approach and plans to proceed with negotiations. South Korea's acting President Han Duck-soo mentioned that talks would be accelerated to ease tariff-related concerns. Japan, too, has urged the US to reconsider its current tariff structure.
5. Updated Country-by-Country Tariff Breakdown
The Trump administration is expected to release a revised tariff list, detailing updated duties applied on a per-country basis. The new framework reflects recent negotiations and retaliatory decisions, with China being the only nation subject to significantly higher rates at 125%.
