Trump Critiques Zohran Mamdani's Victory Speech For Its Anger And Lack Of Respect For Washington

US President Donald Trump criticised New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani's victory speech, describing it as "very angry". Trump believes Mamdani is off to a poor start and risks failure if he doesn't show respect for Washington. In his speech, Mamdani declared that New York would be driven by immigrants, challenging Trump's immigration policies.

Trump expressed his views during an interview with Fox News in Miami. He remarked, "Yeah, I thought it was a very angry speech, certainly angry toward me, and I think he should be very nice to me. You know, I'm the one that sort of has to approve a lot of things coming to him. So he's off to a bad start."

Immigrant Power and Political Change

Mamdani's passionate address celebrated the end of a "political dynasty" and emphasised immigrant empowerment. He stated that New York would now be "led by an immigrant" after his historic win. Mamdani argued that the city could demonstrate how to defeat Trump by dismantling the conditions that enabled his rise.

He further added, "After all, if anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him. And if there is any way to terrify a despot, it is by dismantling the very conditions that allowed him to accumulate power," drawing applause from the audience.

Addressing Corruption and Labour Rights

Mamdani vowed to hold landlords accountable and tackle corruption benefiting billionaires like Trump. He promised to support unions and enhance labour protections. Mamdani highlighted that when workers have strong rights, those who exploit them become powerless.

"We will hold bad landlords to account because the Donald Trumps of our city have grown far too comfortable taking advantage of their tenants," he said. "We will put an end to the culture of corruption that has allowed billionaires like Trump to evade taxation and exploit tax breaks."

A City Built by Immigrants

Mamdani reiterated New York's identity as an immigrant city: built, powered, and now led by immigrants. He addressed Trump directly: "So hear me, President Trump, when I say this: To get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us."

When asked about Mamdani's remarks against him, Trump described them as "very dangerous". He warned Mamdani about the importance of respecting Washington for success. The president expressed mixed feelings about Mamdani's potential success but prioritised New York City's prosperity.

Trump's Perspective on Communism

Trump labelled Mamdani a "communist" and doubted communism's effectiveness based on historical failures. He commented on communism's track record: "Communism or the concept of communism has not worked. I tend to doubt it's going to work this time," reflecting scepticism about its viability.

When questioned about reaching out to Mamdani, Trump suggested it should be the other way around. He stated that while he wants New York City to thrive due to his affection for it, he believes Mamdani should initiate contact with Washington.
