Trump Criticises Detroit in Campaign Speech, Warns of City's Future Under Kamala Harris

Donald Trump, the former US President, criticised Detroit during a speech to an economic group. He warned that if Vice President Kamala Harris were elected, the entire nation could resemble Detroit. "The whole country will be like — you want to know the truth? It'll be like Detroit," he stated. "Our whole country will end up being like Detroit if she's your president."

Trumps Remarks on Detroit Spark Controversy

Trump's remarks were made while addressing the Detroit Economic Club, appealing to the auto industry in Michigan's largest city. Despite his criticism, he also described Detroit as a "developing" city, seemingly offering a compliment. Democrats in Michigan quickly responded to Trump's comments.

Democratic Response and Criticism

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan highlighted the city's recent improvements in crime reduction and population growth. "Lots of cities should be like Detroit. And we did it all without Trump's help," he remarked on social media. US Representative Shri Thanedar urged Trump to refrain from mentioning Detroit and its residents.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel commented on Trump's efforts to win over Michigan voters. She said on X, "This guy is calling us ugly and then asking us out on a date." Governor Gretchen Whitmer also responded on X, stating, "And you better believe Detroiters won't forget this in November."

Trump's Campaign and Wayne County's Voting History

Wayne County, where Detroit is located, has not been favourable to Trump in past elections. In both 2016 and 2020, he received about 30% of the vote there, losing by significant margins. Following Trump's appearance, his campaign released a statement criticising globalist policies supported by Kamala Harris for moving manufacturing overseas.

Victoria LaCivita, Trump's Michigan communications director, stated that his policies would bring economic success and stability to Detroit. She claimed they would help the city reach its full potential.

Detroit's Recent Developments

Many in Detroit feel the city has transformed from a national joke to an attraction. Nearly ten years after its bankruptcy, Detroit has stabilised its finances and improved city services. The population decline has slowed, and efforts have been made to clean up blight across its 139 square miles.

Detroit has become a popular destination for conventions and meetings. In April, it set an attendance record for the NFL draft with over 775,000 fans visiting downtown for the event. Shortly after Trump's remarks, thousands were expected downtown for a baseball game as the Tigers aimed to win their AL Division Series.

Some attendees interpreted Trump's comments as referring to Detroit's past financial struggles. Judy Moenck, 68, said she didn't think it was intentional on his part. Her husband Dean Moenck, 74, no longer considers himself a Republican under Trump and believes the comment fits his campaign style of highlighting negatives.

Trump has previously insulted cities where he's campaigned. While in New York for legal trials, he criticised the city as dirty and crime-ridden. He suggested that concerns about migrants and safety might sway Democratic residents to vote for him.
