Trump's Controversial Claims Linking Diversity Hiring to DC Plane Crash Under Scrutiny

During a White House briefing, Donald Trump began with a moment of silence for victims of the Reagan National Airport crash. However, he soon criticised diversity hiring, alleging it might have contributed to the crash. He blamed various parties, including the helicopter pilot, air traffic control, and Democrats like Joe Biden and Pete Buttigieg. Buttigieg responded by calling Trump "despicable." The crash's cause remains unknown as investigations continue.

Trump Links Diversity Hiring to Plane Crash

Reporters questioned Trump's claims linking diversity hiring to the crash. He suggested that previous leadership had deemed the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) workforce "too white." Trump did not provide evidence for these claims but insisted on the importance of high standards and psychological quality in aviation roles.

Diversity Hiring Allegations

Trump was asked if diversity hiring caused the crash and what evidence supported this claim. He replied, "It just could have been. We have a high standard. We've had a much higher standard than anybody else. And there are things where you have to go by brainpower. You have to go by psychological quality, and psychological quality is a very important element of it."

He continued, "These are various, very powerful tests that we put to use. And they were terminated by Biden. And Biden went by a standard that seeks the exact opposite. So we don't know. But we do know that you had two planes at the same level. You had a helicopter and a plane."

Trump added, "That shouldn't have happened. And, we'll see. We're going to look into that, and we're going to see. But certainly for an air traffic controller, we want the brightest, the smartest, the sharpest. We want somebody that's psychologically superior. And that's what we're going to have."

Investigation and Accountability

When asked about blaming diversity elements without confirming controller errors, Trump stated, "It's all under investigation." Reporters pressed further on how he concluded diversity played a role in the crash without evidence. Trump responded by emphasising common sense and the need for brilliant people in complex aviation roles.

Trump faced scrutiny over his claim that Democratic presidents promoted hiring people with disabilities in aviation roles. A fact-check revealed this policy existed during his first term as well. When confronted with this information, Trump insisted he changed Obama's policy during his administration.

Policy Changes and Confirmations

Trump claimed he altered policies during his first term but alleged Biden reversed them upon taking office. He mentioned signing a new order recently to enhance intelligence standards in aviation roles.

The president acknowledged the importance of having Sean Duffy confirmed as transportation secretary during such crises. He expressed frustration over delays in confirming nominees due to Democratic opposition.

Safety Concerns Addressed

Asked if Americans should worry about flying after the crash, Trump reassured them of safety in air travel. He planned to fly to Palm Beach soon and reiterated confidence in aviation safety measures.

Trump criticised diversity hiring efforts again while concluding the briefing but clarified he wasn't blaming controllers directly for the crash.

"Flying is very safe," he stated confidently. "We have the safest flying anywhere in the world, and we'll keep it that way."
