Trudeau Under Fire: Over 20 Canadian MPs Demand Leadership Change Amid Rising Discontent
Discontent is escalating within Canada's Liberal Party, with over 20 Members of Parliament (MPs) urging Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to step down after recent poll defeats in Toronto and Montreal.
According to reports from CBC News, a growing faction of lawmakers is increasingly dissatisfied with Trudeau's leadership, prompting a series of secret meetings among disgruntled MPs.

The unrest began brewing after the unexpected loss in the Toronto-St. Paul's byelection in June. The situation worsened following the Liberal Party's disappointing performance in the recent Montreal byelection. The absence of Trudeau and his chief of staff, Katie Telford, at a recent summit in Asia provided frustrated MPs an opportunity to convene and strategize their next steps.
At least 20 leaders have signed a document calling for a change in leadership. An earlier report by the Toronto Star indicated that "at least 30 to 40 MPs" are ready to add their names to a letter demanding Trudeau's resignation. However, the total number of dissenting MPs may still fall short of the critical mass needed to effect a leadership change, as the Liberal Party currently holds 153 seats in Canada's House of Commons.
The dissenting document, described as a pledge rather than a traditional letter, aims to create a binding agreement among MPs to push for Trudeau's resignation. This urgency stems from concerns that any delay could lead to a splintering of their cause, as seen after the Toronto byelection defeat. One MP involved stated, "This is an insurance policy. We needed to act before the pressure from the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) intensifies."
Trade Minister Mary Ng, who is traveling back to Canada with Trudeau from Laos, expressed disappointment over the MPs' plan and reaffirmed her confidence in the Prime Minister.
In September, a parliamentary agreement with another party that had kept Trudeau in power fell apart, and later that month, he survived an attempt by the opposition Conservative Party to force an election. The current climate within the Liberal Party raises questions about the stability of Trudeau's leadership and the future of his government as tensions mount ahead of upcoming elections.
