Tree of Life Synagogue Demolition Begins in Pittsburgh

The Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, the site of the deadliest antisemitic attack in US history, is being demolished to make way for a new building that will include spaces for worship, a museum, an education center, and a movie theater.

Demolition work has commenced at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the site of the deadliest antisemitic attack in U.S. history. The synagogue is being demolished as part of an effort to reimagine the building and honor the 11 people who were killed there in 2018.

Preserving the Sanctuary

The demolition process started gradually, with crews carefully removing the building's exterior. While most of the structure will be demolished, portions of the sanctuary walls will be preserved. The new building will feature spaces for worship, a museum, an education center, and a movie theater.

Mixed Emotions

Carole Zawatsky, the head of the nonprofit organization overseeing the project, was present at the site as demolition began. She expressed a range of emotions, including bittersweetness at the reason for the demolition but also tremendous excitement about the project's progress. She described the moment as sobering and a physical manifestation of healing.

A Symbol of Resilience

Zawatsky emphasized the significance of the project as a symbol of resilience and moving forward. She stated, "It is an incredible symbol of great resilience and moving forward."

Remembering the Victims

The October 27, 2018, attack tragically claimed the lives of 11 worshippers from three congregations that met at the synagogue: Dor Hadash, New Light, and Tree of Life. Since then, the three congregations have been meeting at nearby synagogues.

Memorial Plans

In a related project, a memorial to the victims is being planned for a site just outside the synagogue. The planning process for the memorial involved representatives of the congregations and the victims' families.

Design of the Memorial

The memorial's design includes a walkway leading visitors into a garden memorial featuring 11 sculpted forms of open books. Each book represents one of the individuals who lost their lives in the attack. These books symbolize the "Book of Life," where, according to Jewish tradition, the righteous are named.

Sentencing of the Perpetrator

The individual responsible for the killings was sentenced to death last year following the conclusion of a long-delayed federal trial.
