Transition At OpenAI: Sam Altman's Exit, Emmett Shear Takes Helm

It appears that OpenAI is on the brink of significant change. Sam Altman, the former CEO instrumental in ChatGPT's creation, won't be returning despite discussions about his reinstatement falling apart.

According to a report from The Information, sources close to Altman disclosed that he won't resume his role as OpenAI's CEO as his conditions for returning were turned down.

After extensive discussions with the board of directors responsible for his dismissal and talks with the remaining leadership and major investors, Altman has opted not to reclaim his position at the startup he co-founded in 2015, a source quoted in the report stated.

Emmett Shear, a co-founder of Twitch, previously served as its CEO until March 2023 and now holds a part-time role at Y Combinator. Notably, Y Combinator stands as a significant investor in OpenAI, alongside Microsoft. Shear's involvement in securing funding and building Twitch as a premier game streaming platform has proven vital.

With Altman's departure and Greg Brockman's removal from OpenAI's board, Microsoft eyes an opportunity to secure a board seat. While they had considered it if Altman returned, there's still a chance they'll pursue it now, possibly aiming for a seat with voting powers.

The aftermath of Altman and Brockman's exits has prompted key staff and engineers at OpenAI to plan their departures. Some intend to follow Altman to his new venture or join competing firms.

Notably, three senior researchers, including Jakub Pachocki, Aleksander Madry, and Szymon Sidor, have resigned. Their departure signals a significant shift within OpenAI, impacting its AI development strategies, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Competitors like Cohere and Adept are actively recruiting OpenAI talent. Meanwhile, former OpenAI affiliates are increasingly submitting resumes to Google's DeepMind, marking a trend in staff migration.
