To Practice Islam, Star Pakistani Cricketer Ayesha Naseem Quits Sports At The Age Of 18

Pakistani cricketer Ayesha Naseem, who was once dubbed as a "serious talent" by none other than legend Wasim Akram, has decided to quit cricket citing her devotion to Islamic principles. She is just 18.

The hard-hitting batter, who had a bright future, announced her retirement from all forms of cricket at an age when most players start their journey in top-flight cricket. The efforts by Pakistan women's team captain Nida Dar and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to change her decision went in vain as Naseem has made up her mind, according to a report in PTI.

Ayesha had first informed the PCB in February-March that she had left playing cricket, a source told the news agency. "She was contacted for a training camp and assignment but she told the board she no longer wanted to play cricket," the source added. It her personal decision and made it clear that she "wanted to be a practising Muslim and live her life as per Islamic teachings".

"Efforts were made even by Nida Dar and some Pakistan players to convince her that she can be a practising Muslim and also play cricket at the same time but Ayesha refused to rethink her decision."

Ayesha, known for her powerful batting, had quickly risen to become one of the most promising young talents in Pakistan women's cricket. Having represented Pakistan in four One-day Internationals and 30 T20 Internationals (T20Is), Ayesha was seen as a bright prospect for the future of the team. However, her journey in cricket wasn't without challenges. Hailing from a conservative family, it was an uphill task for Ayesha to gain permission to pursue her passion for cricket.

Despite overcoming those initial obstacles, things became difficult for her once she started touring with the Pakistan team. Troubles arose within her family, leading her to make a heartfelt decision. In the end, she chose to step away from cricket and devoted herself to her faith, embracing a more devout life as a practising Muslim, and adhering to its teachings.

It may be recalled that Pakistan men's team players, such as Saeed Anwar, Inzamam ul Haq, Muhammad Yousuf, Saqlain Mushtaq and Mushtaq Ahmed had turned to religion even as they played international cricket. However, only Anwar left the game altogether after losing his young daughter in 2002.
