Three Men Shot and Injured Near University of Vermont in Possible Hate Crime
Three young men of Palestinian descent were shot and injured near the University of Vermont in a possible hate crime.
Three young men of Palestinian descent were shot and injured near the University of Vermont in Burlington during a Thanksgiving holiday gathering. The incident, which took place on Saturday evening, is being investigated as a potential hate crime by the local police.

The Shooting
According to Burlington Police Chief Jon Murad, the shooting occurred at approximately 6:25 pm near the UVM campus. The victims, all in their 20s, were visiting the home of one of their relatives when they were confronted by a white man with a handgun. Without uttering a word, the man fired at least four rounds from the pistol and fled the scene.
Two of the victims sustained stable injuries, while the third suffered more severe wounds. All three individuals are of Palestinian descent, with two being US citizens and one a legal resident. Two of them were wearing traditional black-and-white Palestinian keffiyeh scarves at the time of the incident.
Hate Crime Investigation
Police Chief Murad acknowledged the possibility of a hate crime motive behind the shooting. He expressed his condolences to the victims and their families and emphasized the need to avoid drawing conclusions based on uninformed statements. The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) had earlier released a statement claiming that the victims were Palestinian American college students and that there was reason to believe the shooting was motivated by their Arab ethnicity.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has also been notified of the incident and has indicated its readiness to investigate any potential federal violations. President Joe Biden has been briefed on the shooting and will continue to receive updates as the investigation progresses.
Escalating Tensions
The shooting comes amid heightened tensions in the United States due to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. Despite a fragile cease-fire agreement, violence continues to escalate in the region. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest or conviction of the person or people responsible for the shooting.
Senator Bernie Sanders Condemns the Attack
Senator Bernie Sanders, the Vermont Independent, strongly condemned the attack, stating that hate has no place in Burlington or anywhere else. He called for a full investigation and expressed his thoughts and support for the victims and their families.
The shooting of three young men of Palestinian descent near the University of Vermont has sparked concerns about hate crimes and rising tensions in the United States. Law enforcement authorities are investigating the incident, and the community awaits further information and updates as the investigation unfolds.
