Thousands Flee Goma Amid Escalating Fighting as Rebels Claim Control of Key City
Thousands of residents fled Goma on Monday as intense fighting erupted between Congolese forces and M23 rebels, who are reportedly backed by Rwanda. The rebels claimed to have seized control of this major regional hub in eastern Congo. Amidst the chaos and gunfire, some residents sought refuge in safer areas, while others attempted to cross into Rwanda, carrying their belongings.

Rebels' Advance and Regional Impact
The M23 rebels' advance into Goma marks a significant escalation in the long-standing conflict between Congo and Rwanda. This region, rich in minerals vital for global technology, has been a battleground for various armed groups. The Congolese government confirmed the presence of M23 rebels in Goma but did not declare them in control of the city.
Government Response and International Reactions
Congolese government spokesman Patrick Muyaya urged residents to remain indoors and called on Congolese worldwide to support their country. "No centimeter will be given up!!!" he wrote on X. Meanwhile, the UN Security Council and countries like the US, UK, and France condemned the rebel actions and demanded an immediate withdrawal.
Humanitarian Crisis Worsens
The conflict has exacerbated an already dire humanitarian situation, with over 6 million people displaced in the region. Goma's airport, crucial for aid delivery, has been closed due to the fighting. Hospitals are overwhelmed with injured residents, and displacement camps have been hit by shelling.
Rwanda's Stance and Accusations
Rwanda's Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused Congo of failing to engage in dialogue with M23, describing them as a "Congolese rebel group fighting to protect their community." Rwanda claims this failure has prolonged the conflict, posing a threat to its security. Congo has severed diplomatic ties with Rwanda over these tensions.
Historical Context of M23 Rebels
The M23 group emerged from a failed integration of ethnic Tutsis into the Congolese army in 2012. They claim to defend Tutsis from discrimination but have often targeted the Congolese government. After years of inactivity, they resurfaced in 2021, accusing Congo of neglecting commitments to integrate Tutsis into its army.
Escalating Violence and Regional Stability
Analysts warn that this escalation could further destabilise an already fragile region. The conflict has seen several towns near the Rwandan border fall to insurgents. The UN peacekeeping force MONUSCO has been present for over two decades but faces challenges amid ongoing violence.
As tensions rise, many Congolese soldiers have surrendered in Rubavu, Rwanda. The situation remains volatile, with no clear resolution in sight. The international community's role will be crucial in addressing this complex crisis and ensuring stability in the region.
