Thai Hostages Released from Gaza: Health Status Report After 15 Months of Captivity

The mother of a Thai hostage, held in Gaza for over a year, initially failed to recognise her son during his release. Surasak Rumnao, 32, was abducted from Yesha, Israel, on October 7, 2023. His mother, Khammee Lamnao, described him as looking pale and swollen. "I was so happy that I could not eat anything," Khammee shared during a video call with The Associated Press.

Health Update on Released Thai Hostages

Five Thai hostages were freed on Thursday and were greeted by Israeli and Thai officials waving flags and cheering. They arrived at a hospital near Tel Aviv for medical evaluations. Alongside the Thais, three Israelis were also released in the exchange, while Israel freed 110 Palestinian prisoners. The released Thais included Watchara Sriaoun, Sathian Suwannakham, Pongsak Thaenna, and Bannawat Saethao.

Thai Hostages' Health and Well-being

Dr. Osnat Levzion-Korach from Shamir Medical Center reported that the released hostages were in "fair" health. Although they had been kept underground without sunlight for long periods, they did not seem malnourished. Their relatively young age contributed to their survival in captivity with good physical condition.

Thailand's ambassador to Israel, Pannabha Chandraramya, facilitated emotional video calls between the hostages and their families upon their arrival at the hospital. She expressed immense joy at witnessing their release just before concluding her five-year term as ambassador.

International Efforts and Future Plans

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra expressed gratitude to Qatar, Egypt, Iran, Turkiye, the United States, Israel, and the Red Cross for negotiating the hostages' release. He announced that Thailand's foreign minister would visit Israel soon. Ambassador Pannabha mentioned plans to bring some relatives of the released hostages to Israel and assist them in returning home once medically cleared.

The Israeli government will recognise the released Thai hostages as terror victims. This status grants them financial benefits and healthcare. Alex Gandler from Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that former employers welcomed the released Thais at the hospital since they had no family in Israel.

Ongoing Concerns and Commitments

Israel remains committed to freeing all hostages regardless of nationality. Currently, one Thai hostage remains in Gaza along with one Nepali and one Tanzanian hostage. The bodies of two Thais and one Tanzanian are also held there. Discussions between Israel and Hamas regarding these international hostages are set to begin next week.

The conflict has claimed 46 Thai lives according to Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This includes two Thai citizens killed on October 7, 2023, whose bodies were taken into Gaza. During a previous ceasefire in November 2023, 23 Thai nationals were released through negotiations involving Thailand, Hamas, Qatar, and Iran.
