Nato and Afghan military headquarters are located in the Kandhar airport compound.

Military personnel and civilians have also been killed in the attack. However, details of the military and civilian casualties are yet to be confirmed.

The Taliban militants attacked a police station in Afghanistan's southern province of Kandhar on Monday, triggering a heavy gunfight, a police source said.

Militant violence has increased across Afghanistan since the departure of most Nato and US forces last year.
