Sweden Reports First Case of More Infectious Mpox Strain from Congo

Swedish health authorities have identified the first case of a person infected with the more contagious form of mpox, initially detected in eastern Congo. This announcement came a day after the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the outbreaks in Africa a global emergency. The patient sought medical care in Stockholm, according to the Swedish public health agency.

Mpox Outbreaks and Global Emergency

The WHO reported over 14,000 cases and 524 deaths across more than twelve African countries this year, surpassing last year's figures. Notably, over 96% of these cases and fatalities have occurred in Congo. Scientists are concerned about the emergence of a new, deadlier form of mpox in a Congolese mining town, which has the potential to spread more easily.

The Swedish public health agency stated that the patient contracted the virus during a stay in an area of Africa experiencing a significant outbreak. Magnus Gisslen, a state epidemiologist with the agency, confirmed that the individual had received treatment and was given specific guidelines to follow.

Transmission and Risk Assessment

Mpox primarily spreads through close contact with infected individuals, including sexual contact. Despite the presence of a patient with mpox in Sweden, officials assured that the risk to the general population remains "very low." They acknowledged that occasional imported cases might continue to occur but emphasized that these instances are manageable.

Given Sweden's resources and those of other wealthy nations, scientists believe that any new outbreaks linked to Congo could be contained swiftly. The ability to quickly identify and isolate cases is crucial in preventing widespread transmission.

Earlier this year, scientists noted the appearance of a new variant of mpox in Congo, which can be fatal for up to 10% of those infected. This variant's potential for easier spread has raised concerns among health experts.

The Swedish public health agency's statement highlighted that while the presence of mpox in the country does not significantly impact public risk, vigilance is necessary. The agency continues to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as needed.

The WHO's declaration of a global emergency underscores the severity of the mpox outbreaks in Africa. Efforts are being made internationally to address and contain the spread of this infectious disease.

Swedish officials remain committed to ensuring public safety and mitigating any potential risks associated with mpox. The identification and treatment of cases are part of ongoing efforts to manage and control infectious diseases effectively.

The situation remains under close observation by health authorities worldwide as they work together to prevent further spread and protect public health.
