Starbucks Sued Over Ethical Sourcing Claims
A consumer advocacy group has filed a lawsuit against Starbucks, alleging that the companys claims of ethical coffee sourcing are false and misleading, citing media reports of abuses on farms that supply coffee and tea to Starbucks.
A consumer advocacy group has filed a lawsuit against Starbucks, alleging that the company's claims of ethical coffee sourcing are false and misleading. The National Consumers League (NCL) cited media reports of abuses on farms that supply coffee and tea to Starbucks, casting doubt on the company's packaging statements about its commitment to 100% ethical sourcing.

Starbucks Responds to the Lawsuit
Starbucks acknowledged the lawsuit and expressed its intention to vigorously defend against the asserted claims. The company stated that it takes allegations of labor abuses seriously and actively engages with farms to ensure adherence to its standards.
Allegations of Labor Abuses
The lawsuit highlights specific incidents, including a 2022 case in Brazil where police rescued 17 workers, including three teenagers, from a coffee farm. These workers were subjected to outdoor labor without protective equipment and forced to lift heavy sacks of coffee. The case was reported by Reprter Brasil, a group of journalists focused on workers' rights and environmental issues.
Another incident mentioned in the lawsuit is a 2023 BBC report exposing sexual abuse and harsh working conditions on the James Finlay tea plantation in Kenya. Although James Finlay was a supplier to Starbucks at the time, the company clarified that it no longer sources tea from that plantation.
Starbucks' Ethical Sourcing Practices
Starbucks procures approximately 3% of the world's coffee and collaborates with 400,000 farmers across 30 countries. The company developed ethical sourcing guidelines in 2004 and employs third-party verification to assess conditions at its suppliers. Starbucks maintains a zero-tolerance policy for child labor and requires farmers to provide safe, fair, and humane working environments.
NCL's Concerns and Demands
Despite Starbucks' efforts, the NCL argues that the company misleads consumers by not disclosing that its certification program does not guarantee ethical sourcing. The group is seeking a court order to prevent Starbucks from engaging in deceptive advertising and to require the company to launch a corrective advertising campaign.
The lawsuit against Starbucks raises questions about the effectiveness of the company's ethical sourcing practices and its transparency with consumers. As the case progresses, the outcome will have implications for Starbucks' reputation and its commitment to ethical sourcing in the coffee and tea industry.
