South Sudan and Kenya Presidents Advocate for Resolution in Stalled Peace Talks

Peace negotiations for South Sudan, previously conducted in Kenya, are set to resume. This decision follows a meeting between President Salva Kiir and Kenyan President William Ruto. They instructed the mediation team to address unresolved matters within two weeks. The discussions had been on hold since July when Riek Machar's party withdrew, objecting to changes in the 2018 peace agreement.

Leaders Push for Resolution in Peace Talks

The 2018 peace agreement, which ended a five-year civil war claiming over 400,000 lives, remains partially unfulfilled. South Sudan has delayed its elections from December 2023 to 2025 to implement essential electoral processes outlined in the agreement. This delay aims to ensure a stable political environment for future elections.

Peace Talks and Security Concerns

The Tumaini initiative, ongoing in Kenya since May, seeks to include non-signatory groups in peace efforts for South Sudan. The country has been marred by civil war and ethnic violence. However, participants have raised concerns about a new security law that permits detention without warrants. This law has drawn criticism from Western envoys and human rights organisations.

Critics argue that the security law could be exploited given South Sudan's fragile political and judicial systems. These concerns highlight the challenges facing the country's peace process and governance. Ensuring human rights and legal protections remain crucial as South Sudan navigates its path towards stability.

Economic Challenges Amidst Peace Efforts

South Sudan is also grappling with an economic crisis. Civil servants have not received salaries for nearly a year due to disrupted oil exports. A damaged pipeline in neighbouring Sudan has exacerbated the situation, impacting the country's primary revenue source. Addressing these economic issues is vital for sustaining peace efforts.

The resumption of peace talks underlines the urgency of resolving outstanding issues to stabilise South Sudan. As leaders push for progress, balancing security concerns and economic recovery will be key to achieving lasting peace in the region.
