Biden Eyes South Carolina Win to Kickstart Democratic Nomination Process

President Joe Biden is poised for a crucial victory in South Carolinas Democratic primary, aiming to validate his efforts to empower Black voters who played a pivotal role in his 2020 campaign. The states significance lies in its large African American population, making it the first primary with a substantial minority presence.

President Joe Biden is poised for a decisive victory in South Carolina's Democratic primary on Saturday, marking a significant milestone in his party's nominating process. This primary holds particular importance as it officially kicks off the Democratic Party's selection of its presidential candidate, with Biden aiming to validate the new lineup he championed to empower Black voters.

Bidens South Carolina Showdown: A Pivotal Moment in the 2024 Race

A Contentious Process

Biden faces minimal competition from Minnesota Representative Dean Phillips and self-help author Marianne Williamson. However, the road to South Carolina's leadoff position in the Democratic presidential primary has been long and contentious. The Democratic National Committee (DNC) officially replaced Iowa with South Carolina, recognizing the need for voters of color to play a larger role in determining the party's nominee.

Biden's Commitment to Black Voters

Biden championed a calendar that begins in South Carolina, a reliably Republican state with a significant Black population (26%). Vice President Kamala Harris emphasized the importance of South Carolina's role during a campaign stop at South Carolina State University, stating, "South Carolina, you are the first primary in the nation and President Biden and I are counting on you."

Black Voters' Support for Biden

In the 2020 general election, Black voters constituted 11% of the national electorate, and a remarkable 90% of them supported Biden. This overwhelming support highlights the significance of Black voters in shaping the Democratic Party's presidential nominee.

Biden's Optimism and Campaign Momentum

Biden expressed confidence in his campaign's progress, stating, "I'm feeling good about where we are." He acknowledged that voters are beginning to focus on the election, and polling data is improving across the board. Biden emphasized the importance of winning the campaign for the country's well-being.

DNC Chairman Praises Biden's Commitment

Democratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison commended Biden's efforts on behalf of South Carolina, highlighting his commitment to Black voters. Harrison, a South Carolina native, emphasized the historical significance of Biden's decision to prioritize South Carolina in the primary calendar.

A New Primary Calendar

Biden's push for South Carolina to go first is followed by Nevada three days later. The revised calendar also includes Michigan, a large and diverse swing state, on February 27, ahead of the expansive group of states voting on March 5, known as Super Tuesday.

Biden's Resurgence in South Carolina

South Carolina holds special significance for Biden, as it was where he reversed his fortunes in the 2020 Democratic primary after facing defeats in Iowa, New Hampshire, and Nevada. Many Black Democrats in South Carolina remain loyal to Biden due to his previous role as vice president under the nation's first Black president, Barack Obama.

Concerns about Biden's Age

Some voters expressed concerns about Biden's age (81), as many Americans have indicated in public polling. However, they acknowledged that Biden is a preferable choice compared to former President Donald Trump (77), who is the Republican frontrunner.

Defying the New Calendar

New Hampshire held a primary last week that disregarded the new calendar and was not sanctioned by the DNC. Despite this, Biden won the state via write-in votes. A significant victory in South Carolina could alleviate the concerns of a majority of voters, as most Democrats do not want Biden to seek a second term.

Democratic Unity Behind Biden

The Democratic establishment, including potential presidential hopefuls who could have challenged Biden from the left or middle, have aligned behind him. The DNC is not planning primary debates, and Phillips has challenged the exclusion of his name from primary ballots in Florida and North Carolina.

Focus on the General Election

Biden's reelection campaign is already concentrating on the November general election. Vice President Harris emphasized the threat posed by Trump to democracy and freedoms, urging Americans to recognize the importance of this election.

Fundraising and Campaign Finances

Biden's campaign, the DNC, and its fundraising arms announced raising over $97 million in the final three months of last year. They entered 2024 with $117.4 million in cash on hand. Trump amassed approximately $130 million in 2023's final quarter and had over $42 million to start the election year.
