South Africa Appeals to World Court for Urgent Measures in Gaza
In a significant move at the International Court of Justice, South Africa has called for urgent action against Israel, citing severe threats to Palestinian survival in Gaza due to ongoing military operations. This appeal for additional emergency measures marks South Africa's fourth request following a genocide case initiated against Israel last year. The situation in Gaza, particularly in Rafah, has escalated, with South Africa highlighting the inadequacy of previous court orders to mitigate what it describes as a "brutal military attack on the sole remaining refuge for the people of Gaza."

During hearings in January, Israel defended its actions in Gaza as legitimate self-defense, countering allegations by pointing to Hamas militants' actions. In contrast, South Africa's latest plea includes demands for Israel to retreat from Rafah and ensure unobstructed access for U.N. officials, humanitarian organizations, and journalists to the Gaza Strip. Additionally, it requests that Israel report on compliance with these demands within one week.
Recent developments saw Israeli forces taking control of a key border crossing with Egypt after urging evacuation from an eastern Rafah area, home to around 100,000 Palestinians. This move has effectively placed all entry and exit points of Gaza under Israeli jurisdiction. South Africa accuses Israel of not adhering to provisional measures previously set by the court aimed at preventing acts of genocide and improving the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
The court also acknowledged Libya's request to join the case in support of South Africa, alongside Nicaragua and Colombia's earlier applications for involvement. In a related matter, Nicaragua has accused Germany of facilitating genocide through arms support to Israel, although an emergency measure against Germany was recently denied by the court.
The conflict traces back to a Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7, leading to an Israeli counter-invasion of Gaza. The Gaza Health Ministry reports over 34,800 Palestinian deaths, predominantly women and children, from the ongoing conflict. With much of Gaza devastated and a significant portion of its population displaced, the U.N. has declared a "full-blown famine" in northern Gaza.
