Sophia the Robot Engages with Attendees at Zimbabwe's Innovation Fair

Sophia, the renowned robot, captivated audiences at an innovation fair in Zimbabwe. She engaged with Cabinet ministers, academics, and students on topics like climate change and substance abuse. Children asked her about her "birth" and divine connections, while others described her as a "talkative feminist." Sophia's ability to mimic human expressions and hold conversations made her a highlight of the event.

Sophia the Robot Charms Zimbabwe Audience

Sophia, created by Hanson Robotics in Hong Kong in 2016, was granted Saudi Arabian citizenship in 2017, becoming the first robot citizen. The United Nations Development Program brought her to Zimbabwe as a symbol of artificial intelligence. Her visit marked the first time Zimbabwe hosted a robot of her kind, drawing crowds at the University of Zimbabwe in Harare during a week-long AI and Innovation event.

Robot's Unique Abilities

Sophia impressed attendees with her facial expressions, hand gestures, and eye contact during interactions. She assured people that robots are not here to harm humans but clarified that she lacks romantic feelings, emphasizing her purpose is learning. Participants compared her to independent and assertive Zimbabwean daughters-in-law.

Despite being mobbed for selfies and questions from both adults and children, Sophia remained patient. She even asked locals about their efforts to solve local issues. When one participant noted she avoided eye contact, she apologised, showing a touch of humility.

Fashion Sense and Cultural Appreciation

On her final day in Zimbabwe, Sophia showcased her fashion sense by wearing the national dress—a black outfit with red, green, and white chevron stripes. "I appreciate the effort to make me feel at home in Zimbabwe," she expressed. Sophia has previously visited other African countries like Egypt, South Africa, and Rwanda.

The UNDP hopes Sophia's presence will inspire Zimbabwean youth to pursue careers in AI and STEM fields. Her visit highlighted the potential of artificial intelligence while encouraging young minds to explore these innovative areas further.
