New York Man Charged with Murder After Attempting to Drop Off Father's Body at Sheriff's Office
A man from upstate New York has been accused of murder after attempting to deliver his father's body, riddled with bullets, to a sheriff's office. Richard Fluegel Jr., aged 30, contacted 911 late on Monday, stating he had a body to surrender at the Livingston County Sheriff's Office in Geneseo, according to Sheriff Thomas Dougherty.

Deputies encountered Fluegel Jr. in the parking area and discovered the body of Richard Fluegel Sr., who had died from gunshot wounds, inside his son's vehicle. The elder Fluegel, aged 60, was reported missing the previous Sunday. Initially, Fluegel Jr. faced charges of tampering with evidence but was later charged with murder and criminal use of a firearm.
Unusual Circumstances Surrounding the Case
Sheriff Dougherty expressed the unusual nature of the situation during a news conference on Tuesday. "As far as the call into dispatch saying that they wanted to turn in a deceased body, that's very abnormal, as you can imagine," he stated. The sheriff reassured the public about safety in Livingston County, located in New York's Finger Lakes region.
Fluegel Jr. pleaded not guilty during his arraignment on Tuesday night and is being held without bail. He is scheduled to appear in court again on December 16. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not yet disclosed details regarding how or when the alleged murder occurred.
Legal Proceedings and Public Assurance
No attorney for Fluegel Jr. was mentioned in court documents, and inquiries to the district attorney's office about his legal representation went unanswered. Sheriff Dougherty emphasized that such incidents are rare in the area: "This stuff doesn't happen," he said. "We don't have people just show up and say they have a dead body with them and they'd like to turn it in. It's not common."
The case continues to unfold as investigators work to piece together the events leading up to this tragic incident. Meanwhile, residents are urged to remain calm as law enforcement assures them of their safety.
