Slain Activist Charlie Kirk to Receive Posthumous Medal of Freedom, Announces Trump

Slain right-wing activist Charlie Kirk will be posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, former U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Thursday, a day after Kirk's shocking assassination in Utah. The Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian honour in the United States.

Kirk, 31, was fatally shot on Wednesday while delivering a speech at Utah Valley University during an event organised by his advocacy group, Turning Point USA. He sustained a gunshot wound to the neck and was rushed to Timpanogos Regional Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead several hours later. The attack has drawn widespread condemnation and raised serious concerns about political violence in America.

Speaking at the Pentagon, Trump described Kirk as "a giant of his generation, a champion of liberty and inspiration to millions and millions of people." He praised Kirk's ability to connect with young Americans, adding that his "courage, vision, and voice" had left a lasting mark on conservative politics.

The FBI, investigating the assassination, confirmed that it has recovered the high-powered rifle used in the attack. Officials also said that images of the suspected shooter have been identified, but no details about the individual's identity have been released so far.

In a heartfelt message posted on social media, Trump mourned Kirk's loss, writing: "The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me ... Charlie, we love you!" He extended condolences to Kirk's wife, Erika, and his family.

Kirk, a well-known activist and podcaster, was the founder of Turning Point USA and gained prominence as a conservative voice who frequently positioned himself as a "culture warrior." He played a significant role in shaping youth involvement in Republican politics and was regarded as one of the most influential right-wing figures of his generation.

The announcement of the Medal of Freedom underscores the scale of his influence and the deep shock felt within conservative circles following his death.
