Sigrid Kaag Appointed UN Coordinator for Humanitarian Aid to Gaza
Sigrid Kaag, a former Dutch deputy prime minister and Middle East expert, has been appointed the UN coordinator for humanitarian aid to war-torn Gaza. She brings extensive experience in political, humanitarian, and development affairs, as well as diplomacy, to her new role. Kaag is expected to start on January 8 and will facilitate, coordinate, monitor, and verify humanitarian relief consignments to Gaza. She will also establish a UN mechanism to accelerate aid deliveries through states not involved in the conflict.
The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, announced the appointment of Sigrid Kaag as the UN coordinator for humanitarian aid to war-torn Gaza. Kaag, a former deputy prime minister of the Netherlands and a seasoned Mideast expert, brings a wealth of experience in political, humanitarian, and development affairs, as well as diplomacy, to her new role.

Addressing the Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza
The appointment comes in response to the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, where over 2 million civilians are in desperate need of food, water, and medicine. Kaag's primary responsibility will be to facilitate, coordinate, monitor, and verify humanitarian relief consignments to Gaza. She will also establish a UN mechanism to accelerate aid deliveries through states not involved in the conflict.
Widespread Hunger and Insufficient Aid
According to a recent report by 23 UN and non-governmental organizations, Gaza's entire population of 2.3 million is facing a food crisis, with 576,000 people at catastrophic or starvation levels. The report attributed the widespread hunger to insufficient aid entering Gaza.
Following the militant Hamas group's incursion into southern Israel in October 2022, Israel imposed restrictions on the delivery of food, water, medicine, and fuel into Gaza. Despite pressure from the United States, Israel initially allowed only a trickle of aid through Egypt, resulting in a severe shortage of essential supplies.
Kaag's Extensive Experience in the Middle East
Sigrid Kaag has extensive experience working in the Middle East, including in the Palestinian territories. She began her career with the United Nations in 1994 in Sudan and has held various positions within the organization, including working for UNRWA and serving as the regional director for the Middle East for UNICEF.
Kaag has also held prominent roles in the Dutch government, serving as minister for trade and development and later becoming the country's first female foreign minister in 2018. Most recently, she served as deputy prime minister and the first female minister of finance from January 2022.
Departure from Dutch Politics
In July 2022, Kaag announced her decision to leave Dutch politics due to the intense hate, intimidation, and threats she and her family faced. She cited the numerous death threats she received, including a particularly frightening incident when a man showed up at her home shouting and waving a burning torch.
Kaag's decision to prioritize the safety of her family led her to step away from politics, but she remains committed to making a positive impact on the world through her work with the United Nations.
Sigrid Kaag's appointment as the UN coordinator for humanitarian aid to Gaza is a significant step towards addressing the dire humanitarian crisis in the region. Her extensive experience and expertise in the Middle East, combined with her commitment to humanitarian principles, make her well-suited for this challenging role. The international community looks to Kaag to play a pivotal role in alleviating the suffering of the people of Gaza and bringing about lasting peace and stability to the region.
