Shein Faces Investigation in Italy Over Allegations of Greenwashing Practices
The Italian antitrust authority is examining Shein, an online fast fashion retailer, for potentially misleading sustainability claims. The investigation targets Infinite Styles Serves Co. Limited, a Dublin-based entity operating Shein's website and app. Originally founded in China, Shein is now headquartered in Singapore and has rapidly grown by offering low-cost products directly from Chinese factories.

Shein's business model allows it to quickly produce items based on current demand, enabling it to sell inexpensive goods like $11 sweaters and $2 phone cases. This approach has attracted many shoppers but also raised concerns about overconsumption and environmental impact. Critics argue that Shein's practices contribute to waste, which the company claims to be addressing.
Environmental Claims Under Scrutiny
Italian authorities accuse Shein of misleading consumers with its environmental claims. The antitrust watchdog, known as AGCM, suggests that some sustainability references on Shein's Italian site are vague or deceptive. They highlight the "evoluShein" collection, which may have misled buyers into believing the clothes were recyclable.
AGCM also points out contradictions between Shein's decarbonization commitments and the rising greenhouse gas emissions reported in its 2022 and 2023 sustainability reports. These discrepancies have led to further scrutiny of the company's environmental assertions.
Global Challenges for Shein
Shein faces challenges beyond Italy. In the UK, groups like Amnesty International UK have opposed its potential listing on the London Stock Exchange due to labour and environmental issues. These concerns reflect broader scepticism about the company's practices across Europe.
Despite these challenges, Shein has expressed willingness to cooperate with Italian authorities. The company stated: "We would also like to take this opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to complying with the laws and regulations in the markets where we operate and to maintaining transparency with our customers."
The investigation into Shein highlights ongoing global concerns about corporate greenwashing. As companies increasingly promote sustainability, ensuring truthful claims remains crucial for consumer trust and environmental protection.
