Belarusian Filmmaker Faces Extradition to Belarus by Serbian Court

In a significant legal development, a Serbian court has decided to extradite Belarusian filmmaker and pro-democracy activist Andrei Hniot to Belarus, where he faces the risk of imprisonment and torture. This decision was disclosed by the legal team of Hniot and highlighted by Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, an exiled Belarusian opposition leader and former presidential candidate. Hniot, who has been vocal in his criticism of Belarus's authoritarian regime, is wanted in his home country on charges of tax evasion.

Court Rules on Filmmakers Extradition

Hniot's arrest took place on October 30 last year at Belgrade airport, following an Interpol warrant issued at Belarus's behest. Since then, he has been detained at Belgrade Central Prison. The recent court ruling overturns a previous decision by an appeals court which had identified procedural violations and questioned the legal basis for Hniot's extradition.

The backdrop to Hniot's legal troubles is his departure from Belarus in 2020 after denouncing the government of President Alexander Lukashenko and participating in protests against the disputed presidential elections that year. Hniot has stated that the Belarusian regime seeks to penalize him for his opposition to its authoritarian practices, human rights abuses, and electoral fraud.

This case has attracted international attention, with Tsikhanouskaya and Hniot's supporters engaging with EU diplomatic representatives, lawyers, human rights advocates, and media personnel to advocate for his release. The situation underscores the broader context of Serbia's political alignments. Despite formally pursuing EU membership, Serbia has shown signs of gravitating towards Russia and China, distancing itself from the EU pathway. This was further evidenced by reports of Serbia's secret service collaborating with Russian authorities against Russian opposition members in Belgrade, leading to their subsequent arrest and conviction in Russia.

Hniot now faces the possibility of appealing the extradition decision. His case highlights ongoing concerns regarding freedom of expression and political activism within authoritarian regimes, as well as the international community's role in safeguarding individuals at risk of political persecution.
