Air Force Lt. Gen. Steven Nordhaus Nominated for National Guard Bureau Chief Role

A top Air Force commander at the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) has been nominated to lead the National Guard Bureau. The nomination of Air Force Lt. Gen. Steven Nordhaus was sent to the Senate on Tuesday. If confirmed, he will be promoted to four-star general and join the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Nordhaus Nominated as Guard Bureau Chief

Nordhaus, a fighter pilot, currently commands the 1st Air Force and oversees NORAD's continental U.S. region, which manages airspace surveillance and activities for the nation. Previously, he served as the special assistant to the director of the Air National Guard. His nomination comes just over a week before the current chief, Army Gen. Daniel Hokanson, retires on August 2.

Leadership Changes in the National Guard Bureau

The National Guard Bureau is facing significant leadership changes. Lt. Gen. Marc Sasseville, who was vice chief, has already retired. Lt. Gen. Jon Jensen, chief of the Army Guard and acting vice chief, will retire in early August. Lt. Gen. Michael Loh, director of the Air Guard, has also retired.

Maj. Gen. Duke Pirak has been nominated to become the next Air Guard director and has been serving as acting director since March. Maj. Gen. Jonathan Stubbs, currently adjutant general in Arkansas, has been nominated to replace Jensen as director of the Army Guard. However, no hearings or votes have been scheduled for either Stubbs or Pirak.

Pending Nominations and Concerns

U.S. officials indicate that Army Maj. Gen. Joseph Jarrard is likely to be nominated as the next vice chief of the Guard Bureau, but his name has not yet been sent to the Senate. Officials spoke anonymously about these personnel movements.

The delay in confirming these nominations is causing concern within the bureau, which oversees training and oversight of Guard forces deployed for federal duty both overseas and domestically.

The top four officers of the National Guard Bureau have either left or are set to retire by early August, leaving key positions vacant during a busy hurricane season and a potentially challenging election period.

Background of Lt. Gen. Steven Nordhaus

Nordhaus graduated from the Air Force Academy in Colorado and served as an F-16 pilot and instructor during his active duty years. He joined the Ohio National Guard in 1998 and commanded the 180th Fighter Wing there.

He flew combat missions in Iraq and Afghanistan and has accumulated over 3,000 flight hours throughout his career.

The National Guard chief is a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and serves as a crucial link to adjutant generals who command state Guard units across the country and its territories.

The nomination of Nordhaus is one among several top Guard positions that have remained unfilled for weeks or months.

As these leadership changes unfold, it remains essential for the Senate to confirm these nominations promptly to ensure stable leadership within the National Guard Bureau during critical periods.
